Here's a letter from MBUSA to dealers posted on Autospies yesterday:
Dear Colleagues,
In anticipation of the upcoming launch of the all-new MY 2007 S-Class, we have the
following details regarding nomenclature and equipment ordering.
In direct response to many of your supportive comments regarding the V8 engine offerings, we are excited to announce S550 nomenclature for the all-new 5.5L V8 SClass.
S550 nomenclature is exclusive to the US market and allows us to fully capitalize on the marketing opportunities available with the launch of this all-new vehicle. Furthermore, 550 nomenclature will be used for future implementations of the new 5.5L V8 engine. We expect this will simplify the sales process as the engine size is clearly identifiable on the trunk lid. The transition from S500 to S550
nomenclature will take place prior to launch. During the transition to S550, you may in some cases notice S500 is still used in some of our ordering systems. Be assured the changes to these systems are in process and will be completed shortly.
Due to the tremendous worldwide response to the MY2007 S-Class and the enthusiastic support of the new packaging strategy, we are experiencing ordering restrictions for several items of optional equipment. To ensure we receive the
maximum allocation of these restricted options, MBUSA will place the December production orders and include the following restricted options in the highest possible quantity.
These options include:
Active Ventilated Seats (401) Parktronic (220) Keyless Go (889)
Drive Dynamic Seats Multi-Contour Seats
w/ 4-level massage function (432)
Sirius Satellite Radio (536) Integrated Cellular Telephone kit
and Voice Control System (051)
You will then have the opportunity to specify paint and upholstery as well as add options from the remaining available packages and single options to your orders in the quantities available. You will also have the opportunity to delete options (added during the production order) which are not required for your customers. The following options are available in very limited quantities for December production.
Model Nomenclature
December Production
Rear Seat Package (325)
Dynamic Rear View Monitor (218)
Distronic Plus (233)
Heated Steering Wheel (443)
Active Body Control (487)
Electronic Trunk Closer (881)
The following options are not available for December production. Please inform your
customers and adjust your orders accordingly.
Night View Assist (610)
AMG Sport Package (321)
18” Chrome Wheel (R67)
Panorama Sunroof (413)
Wood/Leather Steering Wheel (289)
December production orders will be allocated to you shortly. We look forward to increased capacity for these options and moving forward with the P1/P2/P3 equipment strategy as planned. Until this time, we will no longer accept orders for these packages.

mbz has not truley been too keen on there numbers sence the newer cars have come out.
like-
the current SL/CL600 is a 5.5L V12 Twin Turbo
the current SL55/E55/CL55 is a 5.4L V8 S/C
the current CL/SL65 is a 6.0L V12 Twin Turbo
so the SL55 should be a SL54
and the SL 65 should be a SL60
and the SL600 should be an SL55
so as we can see, the Mercedes Number system is very confused.
but-
the ones that are correct are-
all of the 500s and all of the N/A 55s (c,clk, slk)
i know that there are other engines too, but i just wanted to talk about these ones. and if i left out a car, i know.

SL55/E55/CL55 is a 5.4L V8 S/C............ M113 E55 ML

The S550 and S600 will be the first models in the US followed (in no particular order) by the S63 AMG and probably S450... The S350 and S65 have not been confirmed...
Hope this helps...

Do you know if the S550 will be available for European delivery right away, and if so,
will there be European delivery pricing as well?
Thanks.
