Will one of the ****ing mods lock this thread once and for all. Its turning into that damn thread I created when the LS first came out regarding my review of that car.

Now as for this World Car of the Year bs...I don't care how many automotive journalists reviewed these cars...what were their criteria? Anyway, awards and so-called "professional" reviews mean nothing to me and many of the members of this forum. So keep quoting, it's not going to get you anywhere.
Then if industry experts and other industry used publications which auto manufacturers pay to do their research don't mean anything than no need to debate on any longer. Can't have a debate based solely on biased and ignorant opinions. Basically if a person posts here a link to another magazine link saying how good the benz is over the Lexus you will have a bunch of cheerleaders screaming and yelling but when another magazine comes up with a different conclusion then you get people saying that the mag was biased. Can't argue with ignorant and biased people so lets say all you snobby ignorant biased MB cheerleaders are correct in your own minds ands that is the end of the story.Originally Posted by pmb600

That is an idiotic comparison, and if someone can't see that I don't know what to say.Now as for this World Car of the Year bs...I don't care how many automotive journalists reviewed these cars...what were their criteria? Since everyone of your posts is just to tell us how we are wrong and how Lexus is better, then just go away. We'll stay here and be "snobby ignorant biased MB cheerleaders." I'm sorry you don't like MB because of your experiences, but we still love them--and you can't change that. So goodbye. I'm done with this thread.

WHAT CAR?
CAR OF THE YEAR 2007
WINNER
Luxury car Mercedes-Benz S320 CDl
The S-C1ass is still head and shoulders above its rivals. It's another easy win this year
Make no mistake, Mercedes-Benz rules this sector. Many have tried to undermine the S-Class's dominance - Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Lexus being the main protagonists - but the gulf between the flagship Merc and its rivals remains as wide as ever.
Part of this is due to the undeniable cachet of the badge, but image alone is not enough in the cut-throat world of the business traveller.
Running costs are an essential consideration and the S320’s CDI diesel engine is not only smooth and powerful. its also extremely fuel-efficient, averaging 34mpg. The Mercedes boasts the best residual values in its class, too.
Even if the diesel S-Class was an absolute money pit, we'd still find it hard to resist.
Its built to the most exacting standards using the finest materials and will whisk its lucky owner and a trio of business colleagues to high-pressure meetings in sublime comfort. It will also soothe away the troubles of the day on the return journey.
Most impressively, the air suspension soaks up bumps in a quiet, cushy fashion, yet when the route becomes more demanding, you have only to press the Sport button to tighten up the car's body movements and benefit from greater control.
Equally, all the instruments and major controls work with rewarding precision. That includes the brakes, which are hugely powerful and full of feel.
The cabin is an oasis of tranquillity. There's acres of room in which to stretch out, while scrupulous attention to detail, lashings of high-grade leather, polished wood and aluminium switches endow the cabin with unsurpassed quality.
MARCH 2007 WhatCar.com
Other tasty quotes include: -
The S class has already beaten every rival in petrol form, but now we can adjudicate the best diesel luxury car on sale in 2007.
At motorway cruising speed the S class is virtually silent…
..the most cosseting ride imaginable ….
Its vast 560 litre boot is deep and a useful square shape……
The S class is exquisitely built, with fine shutlines, lavish materials, lustrous paintwork and cool aluminium switchgear.
… jumping into a Jaguar from the Mercedes is akin to turning right rather than left in an Airbus.
The new Mercedes-Benz S class sets lofty targets for every luxury rival: build quality is exquisite; it relaxes or rockets at the driver’s whim; and the roomy cabin pampers and soothes like no other. In short it makes you feel special.

It isn't only prestige. When you drive S you do not feel it like a big car. But LS has feeling of Lincoln. LS style is also nowhere. So certainly it will take attention of car collectors as a nice addition to already sitting S600 in a garage.

So why are you here then. Instead of being rude to others why not go away and do something productive yourself -like switch off your computer perhaps.Originally Posted by Doctodd33

Nice to see a white knight from the UK rise to the defense of MB's S-Class. However, the review you have posted refers to an automobile that is not even available in the US, the S320 CDl. Further, the review itself is published by an online used car dealer, the last place I'd seek an opinion from when purchasing a vehicle in this class.Originally Posted by hawk20

The review has much to say about the S class itself and mentions that the petrol models were similarly better than the opposition. Large parts of the review do not concern the engine. I don't know who you think is an "online used car dealer". What Car is one of the best selling car magazines in Britain. And I am an economist with no links of any kind to the motor trade. I think you should explain or retract.Originally Posted by Infoman

I don't get how it's suppose to compare to an S600, it can't even compare with an S550 (performance wise).
It weighs 5219lbs, the 550 weighs in at 4465lbs. Thats a difference of 754lbs; use the old 1hp per 10lbs of weight and the S550 comes out ahead with +27hp and will handle a hell of a lot better.
That LS is a boat and a half

While my comment was somewhat of a slur, it was an attempt to bring some balance to their slanted reporting for those who are unfamiliar with Brit mags. Whatcar was admittedly at one time a good read, but their editorial content has suffered in recent years, and the look and feel have come to expose their bent on "certain" products. Many readers have complained of this. Car Magazine is a much superior product.Originally Posted by hawk20

I think that is most unfair. What Car is one of the top UK magazines and of high repute. Car Magazine is minor league stuff.Originally Posted by Infoman

First you say the review is published by an "online used car dealer" and now you post a link to another online forum attempting to back up your statement. You did not say What Car "has the credibility of an online used car dealer"--I don't know about What Car's credibility, but I would have understood what you meant if you said that. Your posts are meaningless.

Some great lines, like:
Behind its green Teflon shield, the Lexus proved to be just another overstuffed sedan that can barely top 20 miles a gallon — less, if you actually tap into all that power. If that’s saving the planet, Jor-El had better prepare the escape pod before it’s too late.

YEAH! How about how the 600 hL got WORSE gas mileage and was SLOWER, 0-60, than the 460? Is that crazy or what? Why in the heck would you pay an extra $30,000 for it?Originally Posted by whoover

Can someone reminds me when was last time Lexus designed a "genuine" looking top end luxury car? NEVER. They started copying an S (I still remember the reviews!). Then they failed to refine it to match the evolving S-Class. When "Toyota" finally realized they lost to the S-Class they turned to BMW repeating exatly what they did with their first ever four door luxury sedan. This is so disappointing and this strategy should change in the future to preserve their image as number 1 japanesse car manufacturer specially after they introduce their awesome LF-A sports car.
Nowadays on the streets I find it sometimes really hard to distinguish a Lexus from Avalon from Camry especially from a distance. Have you ever mistaken an S-Class?

You talk about Lexus copying, well all car makers copy. The new S-class (Which is superb) borrowed fender flares from any SUV/RX-8, Trunklid from the 7 series, dash from the 7 series, and electroluminescent gauges from Lexus.Lexus strategy clearly works, the results speak for themselves.

What's the point of all those pics? I don't think the design of the new Lexus is bad. At least it seems like it is more original than in the past.

Oh and for the record, why does everyone think that Mercedes copied the BMW bangle rear end. They had that on the Maybach in development for years prior to that.
