You don't? You are joking, right?
Let me explain.
When you are inside of the car, you drive, you emerge in driving pleasure/expirience, you and the car are as One. You don't care as much about outside.
Sholud I continue?
Ok, let me ask you, do you enjoy the car more inside or outside.
AMG package, if not 63/65, are simply for the look. Outside look. Will anybody notice me, do I look good on the outside.
Mind you, there is nothing wrong with it. That's why people pay extra. We like to be show-offs from time to time.
But, not everybody likes AMG or any other enhacement (me included).
When you gonna be my age (99, approaching hundred), you will understand meaning of stealth.

Just breaking your chops, I'm (only/ouch) 50 and you are?
Don't you say.........pissed off.

LOL, markopolo

My favored driving time is early wkend AMs when mtn twisties are empty and not many cars (except other car nuts enjoying their cars) or people around; have always driven w/roof closed, windows closed, no audio as I enjoy the sound of the exhaust and hate any distractions from dynamics/sounds of driving...steering, throttle, brakes, chassis balance as I (as a mediocre amateur driver) try to drive a precise, fast (but safe) line through twisties

Enjoy exterior aesthetics of 65 as I admire tech stuff like the industrial art of brake calipers and lighter, forged wheels (though I also rather carefully scrutinize brake pedal feel and response in any car I drive)....huge brakes or a loud exhaust mean nothing if the car has crappy brakes or no tq

At least where I work/live, AMG CLs are not at all uncommon; SF is an affluent region; many can afford any car; however, only a few, even in big, jaded regions like SF or NYC, truly appreciate the engineering masterpieces that are these CLs (as much as I mock 550s today, I recall that, when I had my CL550 back in Fall06, I was enjoying it more than the '07 SL65 and '07 997TT that I had owned just prior...these CLs are truly astonishing cars)

And I rather prefer the "stealth wealth" approach of 65 vs driving a 599 or Scud or Veyron...test-drive 'em for oneself....IMO, many far more costly cars like 599/Veyron are inferior to a humble CL65 from any common-sense engineering analysis...or driver enjoyment for a mere amateur on public rds

I now understand what you are saying and agree with both of you guys. Where I live most people have no idea what I am driving and could not tell the AMG look from the man in the moon. Midwest is Midwest if you know what I mean.

PhantASMA Wide Body Kit for Mercedes CL65
ASMA presents the CL PhantASMA65, a car based on the Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG coupe. The exterior is completely different to that of the standard vehicle to such an extent that it is hardly recognisable as something that once was a Mercedes-Benz. Perhaps that was the whole point.

Regardless, the kit fitted includes a new front end with its ASMA-style multiple grille blades and air intakes. At the rear extra air intakes are found on the new bumper. A massive air diffuser splits the four oval tailpipes nestled on either side of the car. So different is the look that ASMA reckons Pablo Picasso himself could have designed it.

The PhantASMA65 runs on shiny 22-inch wheels both front and rear while the tyres are 255/30 ZR 22 up front and 295/25 ZR 22 on the rear axle. The car's chassis has been lowered by some 35mm.

The V12 bi-turbo engine now spews out a brawny 533kW (725hp) and a monumental 1,180Nm (870 lb-ft) of torque. ASMA says the modified CL will achieve a top end of about 330km/h (205mph). Comparatively the five metre-long stock CL 65 AMG spits out 457kW (621hp), wrenches out 1,000Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque and has a limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph).

I'm the "inside man", AMG package is for "outsiders", if you know what I mean, AMG63/65 excluded of course.
My S600 has a factory sport PKG. I know its not an option but there are a very few early build available with the PKG. Consider myself inside. However as far as outside dont care what others think but I want the look to be pleasing to me. I often find myself looking back at lines after exit. I know a lot of people think its poser but I just prefer the look of the more aggressive appearance. To my taste the non sport/AMG cars appear too feminine. I had ordered the 63 but prefered the interior of the 600 and the V-12.

The Mercedes-Benz CL 500 Trademark Centenary Anniversary Edition
This year Mercedes is celebrating the one hundredth birthday of the three-pointed star and the Benz emblem, and what better way to celebrate than by offering yet another special edition of the CL 500 coupe. Titled the CL 500 "Trademark Centenary," the anniversary edition features an AMG Sports Package, a unique exterior paint finish from the designo collection, a hand-stitched designo aniline leather interior and black piano lacquer trim. Of course, no anniversary edition would be complete without a little custom badging, so inserted into the CL Trademark Centenary's center console are the two aforementioned star and Benz emblems, crafted from gilded plate brass.

If you're interested, the Mercedes CL 500 Trademark Centenary can be ordered immediately (provided you're in one of the European markets its available in), with pricing for the upgrade set at 17,850 Euro (incl. 19% German VAT) on top of the standard cost of the CL. Deliveries are set to commence June 26th.

Cool Cars You May Not Know About
1. Saleen S7

Company headquarters: Troy, Mich.
Why It's Cool: Saleen claims the S7 is America's first home-grown supercar. Its credentials certainly back up that claim: a top speed of 200 mph, 750 horsepower and 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.
Price: $550,000 and up

2. Spyker C8 Aileron
Company headquarters: Zeewolde, The Netherlands
Why It's Cool: The 400-horsepower Aileron has a top speed of 187 and gets to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. It has electrically operated, single-hinge tilting doors with remote control, a full-leather interior and leather-trimmed luggage compartment and an exposed gear-changing lever in the front.
Price: $246,000 and up

3. Fisker Karma
Company headquarters: Irvine, Calif.
Why It's Cool: The plug-in sports coupe uses no gas for the first 50 miles, then runs as a hybrid vehicle for any distance after that. It gets to 60 mph in less than six seconds and has a top speed of 125. It comes with an optional full-length solar roof that charges the car and cools the cabin while the vehicle is parked.
Price: $87,900

4. Mitsubishi iMiev
Company headquarters: Tokyo, Japan
Why It's Cool: Mitsubishi just announced plans to partner with Portland General Electric to bring the iMiev (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) to the U.S. before 2012. The tiny car has a range of 80 miles from its lithium-ion battery and charges in about 13 hours from a standard outlet.
Price: $30,000 (estimate)

5. Roewe MGTF
Company headquarters: Shanghai, China
Why It's Cool: Roewe's reborn convertible coupe is about to be relaunched in the United Kingdom for the 2010 model year and will most likely go up against the likes of the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Volkswagon Eos. It's produced by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC has built the MG-Rover cars since 2005) and based on the Roewe 550 sedan.
Price: Undisclosed.

6. SEAT Leon Style Ecomotive
Company headquarters: Martorell, Spain
Why It's Cool: The two-door Leon Style EcomotiveTDI focuses on eco-friendly efficiency. It has a diesel particular filter and gearshift indicator that tells you when to shift (which helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions), and it uses low-resistance tires that improve aerodynamics. The admittedly small 105 horsepower 1.9 liter TDI engine can travel 62 miles on just over one gallon of fuel.
Price: $19,285

7. Koenigsegg CCXR
Company headquarters: Angelholm, Sweden
Why It's Cool: A derivative of the look-alike CCX sports car, the CCXR is the first alt-fuel powered supercar in the world. Its 4.5 liter twin-supercharged engine can run on E85 and E100 biofuel and delivers up to 1018 horsepower. It goes from 0-62 in 3.1 seconds and has a top speed of more than 250 miles per hour. The CCXR is so powerful that its lateral G-forces hit more than 1.4 G.
Price: $2.4 million (approximate)

8. Pininfarina Hyperion
Company headquarters: Bairo, Italy
Why It's Cool: It's a custom-built car based on the Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe. It debuted at the Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Peach, one of the most prestigious competitions for classic and historical cars in the world. The body consists completely of carbon fiber, except for the hood cover and door compartments (made of solid wood by yacht specialists.) It comes with a gold Girard-Perregaux watch that can be affixed to the dashboard of the car.
Price: Undisclosed.

9. Tramontana R
Company headquarters: Girona, Spain
Why It's Cool: The car is tailor-made for the lucky 12 people who get one every year. It's powered by a V12 engine that gets a whopping 720 horsepower, with a body completely encased in ultra-expensive, ultra-lightweight carbon fiber. It has a maximum speed of more than 200 mph and zips from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.
Price: $511,126 and up

10. Leblanc Mirabeau
Company headquarters: Wetzikon, Switzerland
Why It's Cool: The jet-like car is calibrated to Le Mans standards but is street legal nonetheless. Its top speed of 230 mph is produced by a 700 horsepower, V8 supercharged engine. Seating for two, wide-open side cavities and an open top make it distinctive.
Price: $703,000

America's Most Thrilling Drives
Highway One/Big Sur California

Alfred Hitchcock could not have conjured a scarier highway—122 miles of vertigo between Monterey and Morro Bay. Two lanes for nearly its entire length, the road meanders along cliff tops poised high above the Pacific, including 33 bridges and countless drop offs into liquid oblivion. Anyone faintly squeamish should not attempt to drive this route.

The Saddle Road, Big Island Hawaii
The Big Island's incredible Saddle Road shoots between two hulking volcanoes across a sweltering lava-rock desert. “Famously bad and dangerous” is how one guide describes Hawaii Route 200 between Hilo and Waimea. Although improved in recent years, much of the route is narrow and one-way; intermittent fog makes it even more hazardous. Side roads lead to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

Aspen to Leadville via Independence Pass Colorado
The 187-mile drive from Aspen to Leadville traverses some of the highest, harshest and most desolate geography in North America. The drive kicks off with a summit of 12,095-foot Independence Pass, a stretch of state highway 82 that is narrow, twisting and often without guardrails. The latter portion near Cañon City includes a short detour across Royal Gorge Bridge, which hovers 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River — built 1929 and still the highest suspension bridge in the world.

Dalton Highway Alaska
The longest stretch of road in U.S. with no services, the 414-mile Dalton throws down several gauntlets including gravel roadway, steep grades, dangerous animals, and dire weather conditions. It’s an awful long wait for a tow if you break down out here.

U.S. Highway 50 Utah/Nevada
They call it the “loneliest road” in America, the 473 miles of U.S. 50 between Hinckley, Utah and Carson City, Nev. But it’s also one of the creepiest, especially in mid-winter when snow can cover the entire route or the middle of summer when daytime temperatures are almost always in the triple digits. The Nevada Commission on Tourism issues a free “Highway 50 Survival Guide.”

Tail of the Dragon North Carolina/Tennessee
Tucked just below Great Smoky Mountain National Park, the sinuous “Tail of the Dragon” is an 11-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 129 between Tabcat Bridge, Tenn., and Deals Gap, N.C. Get ready for 318 curves, many of them monster switchbacks and hairpins, as well as a series of steep “S” curves called The Slide.

State Highway 170 Texas
This rollercoaster desert road along the Rio Grande is straight out of No Country for Old Men (which was filmed nearby). A dipsy-do roadway, stray animals and floods are just a few of the hazards along the 99 miles of the river road between Lajitas and Candelaria. Much of the highway runs through picturesque Big Bend Ranch State Park.

What the heck is going on here!
Nothing on East Coast?
What about those twisty roads in Manhattan (coming down from the parking spot on the roof of the parking garage)
I'm moving out

Actually I think there were some good east coast drives left off the list...
Maine Coast: From Kittery to Portland to Bar Harbor is spectacular.
Blue Ridge Parkway: from Shenandoah National Park, toward the south end of the Parkway, leading into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Florida Keys: from Key Largo to Key West. And of course, U.S. Highway 1 runs from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida.

Mercedes-Benz to Equip Engines with Stop-Start by 2011
Mercedes-Benz is working on stop-start technology for all engines by 2011 in their quest to improve fuel consumption. Mercedes will introduce the stop-start technology on the E200 CGI, which is a 4 cylinder with 181 hp, from the middle of next year. Autocar reports that by 2011, Mercedes-Benz aims to overcome the issue with fitting the technology on automatics, especially on V6 and V8 models, which have automatic gearboxes fitted as standard.

Christoph Spengel, head of engine development for MB states, “Fitting the system to any engine and gearbox is not a problem, we can get reliability quite easily. Achieving the smoothness of the start is the real problem. Engaging the starter takes a little time, and then firing the engine takes a little time, and it is important that our system does not disturb the driver.”

Mercedes-Benz to Improve Drag Coefficient Over Next Five Years
In a bid to further reduce the fuel consumption of some of its fleet in the future, Mercedes-Benz is developing plans to make its vehicles more aerodynamic in the future.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that over the next five years it is planning to introduce new cars to the market with a drag coefficient of less than 0.20.

The company has just developed the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which is currently the world’s most aerodynamic car thanks to a drag coefficient of 0.24.

However, Mercedes-Benz has revealed that there is still plenty more to learn and further changes to make.

Rainer Tiefenbacher, Project Manager for the E-Class Coupe, said: "There is still plenty more to come as we explore ways of improving fuel efficiency.

"Designers are still learning about what works aerodynamically and are having to consider it more and more when they think about how a car will look."

He added that changes around the engine hood are among the areas where developments could take place.

The Top 10 Collector Cars
1. Ford Mustang
: The Mustang galloped out of the stable into history in 1964. The concept of an inexpensive sports car quickly caught on with more than 126,000 being sold in its first year. The Mustang coupé and convertible had such an extensive option list, Ford advertised that there was a model for everyone. Since its debut, it has had an uninterrupted production run of 45 years.

2. Chevrolet Corvette: The first Corvettes that rolled off the production line were all painted white and fitted with a red interior to keep the cost down to $3,000. But the Corvette only came alive when a Soviet émigré, Zora Arkus-Duntov, took a 283-cubic-inch displacement V-8 engine and a four-speed transmission and dropped it into the Corvette, making it a serious competitor to the Ford Thunderbird.

3. Camaro/Firebird: Twins conceived as competitors to the successful Ford Mustang, the Camaro was the first of the pair to reach showrooms in September 1966. The Firebird soon followed. Other than the obvious external design differences, the Firebird used a Pontiac specific engine. The last Firebird was built in 2003. The Camaro was discontinued in 2002, but will be reintroduced this year.

4. Mercedes-Benz: The 300SL Gullwing is the most sought-after model, with fewer than 1,400 Coupés and 1,838 roadsters built between 1954 and 1963. The most popular models recognized today would be the 230, 250 and 280SL "pagoda" cars built between 1963 and 1971. They were referred to as the pagoda cars because of the concave shape of their removable hard top roof.

5. MG: The MG became a household name on the strength of the number of models introduced into North America by soldiers returning home from Europe after the Second World War. The MGA was the first MG sports car to invade North America, followed by the MGB, which became the largest-selling sports car to come out of the U.K., with 512,000 units being sold.

6. Triumph: The Triumph TR2 was a brave attempt at building a sports car specifically for the North American market by a company that was almost unknown on this side of the pond. Many consider the TR6 as the last of the man's man sports cars to come out of the U.K. It was reminiscent of the Austin-Healy 3000, a bit of a handful to drive with a magnificent throaty exhaust note from the straight six-cylinder engine. The TR7 and TR8 that followed did not have such a loyal following.

7. Cadillac: Cadillac models built for 30 years after the Second World War were considered the standard of North American luxury. At one time, some models of the quintessential American luxury car brand cost up to five times as much as a Chevrolet. The 1959 Cadillac sums up America in the '50s, when that country was obsessed with rockets and space travel. By the mid '60s, finless rear wings appeared on longer and lower Cadillac's.

8. Jaguar: Jaguars have a long history of elegance and sporting performance, synonymous with the British upper class. The popularity of the XK120 to the XK150 sports cars spilled into the '60s. The E-Type, or XKE as it was known in North America, catapulted Jaguar onto the sports-car stage in 1961. By the time production ceased in 1974, the E-Type had become one of the most important sports cars of the 20th century.

9. Tri-Five Chevrolets: The Tri-Five Chevrolets -- 1955, '56 and '57 -- represent a turning point in American automobile history -- what many believe to be the golden age of Chevrolet and its assault on a growing youth market. With a new 265-cubic-inch displacement V-8 engine Chevrolets were no longer considered an old mans car. In 1957, Chevrolet bored the engine out to 283-cid and also offered Ramjet fuel injection.

10. A Multitude of Hotrods: The original hotrod was an older car, typically a Model T, Model A or the ultimate flat-head V-8 Model B. These cars were modified to reduce the weight and improve aerodynamics. The lure of the hotrod began to wane as the major manufacturers introduced vehicles for the muscle-car era. The 1973 oil crisis also had an impact on the automobile. The performance car was out, replaced with safety and fuel efficiency. All of a sudden, the hotrod was back in vogue.

Daimler AG Buys 10% Stake in Tesla Motors
Daimler AG has acquired an equity stake of nearly 10% of Tesla Motors Inc. This investment deepens the relationship between the two companies. They have already been working closely to integrate Tesla’s lithium-ion battery packs and charging electronics into the first 1,000 units of Daimler’s electric Smart car. In order to benefit from each other’s know-how, the investment enables the partners to collaborate even more closely on the development of battery systems, electric drive systems and in individual vehicle projects.

“Our strategic partnership is an important step to accelerate the commercialization of electric drives globally,” said Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “As a young and dynamic company, Tesla stands for visionary power and pioneering spirit. Together with Daimler’s 120 years of experience in the automotive sector this collaboration is a unique combination of two company’s strengths. This marks another important milestone in Daimler’s strategy for sustainable mobility.”

25 Most Iconic Cars of the Past 25 Years
Mazda Miata

Introduced: 1989
Design: Tom Matano
Why it mattered: The Mazda Miata reinvented the roadster market that had once been the domain of British brands such as MG, Triumph, Lotus, and Austin-Healey in the 1960s. The Miata's introduction reopened an industry segment that still thrives today.

Lotus Elise
Introduced: 1996
Design: Julian Thomson
Why it mattered: Aimed at automotive purists, Lotus cars are built to be as lightweight as possible to achieve high speeds. A fiberglass body and bonded frame keep it lighter and faster than other sports cars.

Toyota Prius
Introduced: 1997
Design: Katsuhiko Inatomi, Norio Oseki
Why it mattered: The Honda (HMC) Insight may have been first hybrid car sold in North America, but the Toyota (TM) Prius was the first to become a commercial and pop cultural success. Many of its innovations are under the hood. But, its exterior design features a crucial triangular wedge shape that helps maximize aerodynamics and improve fuel economy.

Audi TT
Introduced: 1998
Design: J Mays, Freeman Thomas, Martin Smith
Why it mattered: The award-winning TT, which first came as a coupe and later a roadster, used a new laser welding process that allowed for seamless design features. Its boldly curved and supposedly Bauhaus-inspired roof line, front, and rear fenders made it an instant design classic.

Volkwagen New Beetle
Introduced: 1998
Design: J Mays, Freeman Thomas
Why it mattered: The successor to the wildly popular Beetle, this update gave fans the original's classic appeal—that unmistakable dome shape and "smiling" front fascia—with modern underpinnings. Most dramatic was the repositioning of the car's engine from the trunk to the front of the vehicle, which brought better handling and grip.

Pagani Zonda
Introduced: 1999
Design: Horacio Pagani
Why it mattered: The poster child for excess in automotive design, the Zonda could reach 60 mph in under four seconds and top out at more than 220 mph—all for a mere $1.2 million. Aside from speed, Batmobile-looks included high-mounted rearview mirrors.

BMW Z8
Introduced: 2000
Design: Henrik Fisker
Why it mattered: The design of this short-lived, high-performance roadster payed homage to classic BMW (BMWG.F) two-seaters from the 1950s and was so well received it earned its designer, Henrik Fisker, an international reputation overnight. Aside from its sleek body lines, the Z8 featured a number of interior design innovations such as center-mounted dials in the cockpit.

MINI Cooper
Introduced: 2001
Design: Frank Stephenson
Why it mattered: This cheeky, retro car was the successor to the classic design originally produced by British Motor in the 1960s. The MINI—now owned by BMW—maintained the basic lines of past models as well as quirkier features such as old-fashioned toggle switches to operate the cabin's windows.

Hummer H2
Introduced: 2002
Design: Wayne Cherry
Why it mattered: The H2 became an emblem of American gas-guzzling excess by virtue of its size and unforgiving aesthetic. The original H2 was faithful to the military humvees that had inspired its design, with an imposing front grille, vertically upright front windshield, and box-shaped windows.

Bentley Continental GT
Introduced: 2003
Design: Dirk van Braeckel
Why it mattered: In the boom years, VW all but cornered the market for ostentatious speed-machines. The record-breaking Continental GT was remarkable for its performance as well as its head-turning design.

Ford GT
Introduced: 2003
Design: Camilo Pardo, J Mays
Why it mattered: Designed in anticipation of the Blue Oval's centennial anniversary, the GT was hailed as a pace car for the rest of Ford's products just as the company entered the most financially difficult period in its history. Discontinued in 2006, the GT's design—including cavernous, rear-wheel-mounted air intakes and rising rear haunches—has nonetheless earned a spot as a classic super car.

Lamborghini Gallardo
Introduced: 2003
Design: Luc Donckerwolke
Why it mattered: The Italian maker of exotic sports cars' volume seller is notable for having significantly evolved and revamped the Lamborghini look. The popular Gallardo's geometric lines helped reestablish and modernize design cues established in the 1970s.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
Introduced: 2003
Design: Gordon Murray
Why it mattered: Argued by many to be among the most beautiful Mercedes (DCX) cars ever built, the SLR is a joint project between the German luxury heavyweight and racing manufacturer McLaren. Design details include an arrow-shaped front nose like those found on Formula 1 race cars and wheels that are shaped like wind turbines.

Jaguar XJ

Redesigned: 2003
Design: Ian Callum
Why it mattered: Originally introduced in the late 1960s, Jaguar's XJ series sedan exemplified the storied brand's uniquely British styling. A 2003 redesign maintained the two most notable design features, the leaping jaguar hood ornament as well as the four round head lamps.

Aston Martin DB9
Introduced: 2004
Design: Ian Callum, Henrik Fisker
Why it mattered: A high-powered sports car, the DB9 has a sloping rear glass window and silver-trimmed tail. As such, it's one of few cars that look as good from the back as they do from the front.

Maserati Quattroporte
Re-introduced: 2004
Design: Pininfarina
Why it mattered: With an oval grille sporting the company's trademark trident, long sloping front hood, and side-mounted portholes, Maserati's Quattroporte created a new niche for high-end, four-door supercars.

BMW 3 Series
Redesigned: 2005
Design: Chris Bangle
Why it mattered: The 3 Series was originally introduced in the mid-1970s and substantially redesigned in 2005. Despite the entirely new body design, the current model sports updated versions of the company's iconic "kidney" shaped grille and the so-called Hofmeister Kink, a forward bend in the C-pillar designers say represents the car's rear-wheel drive.

Bugatti Veyron
Introduced: 2005
Design: Hartmut Warkuss
Why it mattered: At times holding the record as the world's most expensive and fastest car, the Bugatti is another study in excess. For all its performance—the car can reach speeds of over 250 miles per hour—its slick body design and retractable rear spoiler are crucial to keeping it from flying into orbit.

Chrysler 300
Re-introduced: 2005
Design: Ralph Gilles, Freeman Thomas
Why it mattered: In retrospect, the 300 sedan was Chrysler design's last best hope and the only real commercial fruit of the company's ill-fated merger with Daimler. The massive front grille, vertical head lamps, and a high belt line gave the vehicle a distinctive look that somehow simultaneously appealed to urban rap stars and Florida retirees.

Ford Mustang
Redesigned: 2005
Design: Sid Ramnarace, Hau Thai-Tang
Why it mattered: Designers completely remade Ford's classic pony car in 2005, coming up with a radically re-styled vehicle that cemented the nameplate's status as an American icon. Dubbed "retro futurism," the mixture of retro and futuristic design elements—such as round head lamps paired with flared wheel arches—kicked off an industry-wide trend.

Porsche 911
Redesigned: 2005
Design: Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, Erwin Komenda
Why it mattered: Considered by many automotive enthusiasts to be the purest sports car ever made, the 911 has been a gold-standard nameplate since the 1960s. As such, design changes have come with great care. In fact, the car's overall profile has changed little over the years.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Introduced: 2006
Design: Pininfarina, directed by Ferrari's Frank Stephenson
Why it mattered: The most powerful of Ferrari's road cars, this low-slung, exotic sports car recalls the Italian company's 1960s GTO design with its horizontally stretched front grille buttressed by slim front head lights. It's named after the Fiorano Circuit, the company's winding test track in Italy.

Jeep Wrangler
Redesigned: 2007
Why it mattered: The Jeep Wrangler's design hasn't strayed far from the World War II jeeps that inspired it—in fact the Museum of Modern Art has periodically exhibited the Jeep as part of its collection. Though the most recent redesign updated underlying technology, the car still features the classic upright seven-bar grille flanked by two round head lamps.

Nissan GT-R
Re-Introduced: 2007
Design: Shiro Nakamura
Why it mattered: A reimagining of rowdy Japanese "road rockets" popular in the 1970s, the inspiration for this model's square lines and high-tech vents came from Gundam, the Japanese anime series featuring giant robots.

Tata Nano
Introduced: 2008
Design: Girish Wagh, Justin Norek, Pierre Castinel
Why it mattered: The first generation of Indian automobiles will probably not be remembered for aesthetics. Instead, the Nano's major design achievement is to be one of the world's cheapest cars. Its construction features several cost-cutting measures that some say would make it unsaleable in foreign markets, like the elimination of air conditioning and power steering. Still, the Nano could yet head West, and Detroit execs would do well to stay tuned.

Orange County Choppers Builds AMG Theme Motorcycle
If you are an ardent fan of custom motorcycles, the Teutuls would be your demigods. The father-son duo get into verbal brawls, idea clashes, generation gap gaga almost all the time, but the bikes they build reflect the quality of workmanship in the OCC camp.

Often credited for creating pieces of art, the Teutuls were at their best yet again to bring out an AMG chopper.

The OCC team were flown to the AMG factory in Germany so that they could get a taste of AMG, what these cars were capable of, their power and experience of driving one. The team returned back to the shop with a SL63 for further ideas to sprout.

BMW And Daimler Team Up For A New Anti-Collision Radar System
BMW and Daimler have teamed up with Bosch, Continental and Infineon Technologies to form an alliance to increase the use of anti-collision systems across automobile lines.

The joint project is called Radar on Chip or Cars (RoCC), and it is said to be the newest generation radar-based system for vehicles of all classes. The new system will now be able to be produced at a reduced price due to the wide range of companies involved in the project. Along with cheaper prices comes the easier integration, which means, this technology could be coming very soon. The RoCC project is said to be a 3-year venture with a budget of 17 million euros.

The project goal is to create a system able to detect something from as close as five centimeters and as far as 250 metres away. The radar signal will run on a 79Ghz frequency.

Toyota currently has their own anti-collision radar system, and they were the first to do this. There are also similar set ups on the high-end Mercedes-Benz and BMW models, but nothing will compare to this in three years time.

First Drive: Mercedes Benz S400 Hybrid
The Mercedes Benz S400 Hybrid is the world’s first mass produced car with a lithium ion battery. It’s the first Mercedes with a hybrid drive. And, with a price tag likely to approach or exceed $100,000, it’s going to be an ultra-niche vehicle. The S400 Hybrid will arrive in US showrooms beginning in August 2009.

Its competition in the nascent luxury green vehicle market will be the $109,000 two-seat all-electric Tesla Roadster; the $87,000 four-door Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid (not yet out); and the $104,000 Lexus LS 600h L—a V8 hybrid averaging 21 miles to the gallon. Lexus annually sells about 1,000 units of the LS 600h L.

Benz estimates fuel economy for the S400 will be 23 in the city and 33 on the highway. EPA numbers are not yet official, but HybridCars.com did our own mileage test of this big luxury sedan on the roads of Southern Germany. Our drive loop took us from Stuttgart—the home of Mercedes Benz—to the town of Buel and back, a round trip of approximately 150 miles. The route was evenly comprised of high-speed driving on the Autobahn—where we ran at, ahem, greater than 100 mph—as well as moderately paced rural roads, and narrow streets through smaller hamlets. We achieved an impressive 29.3 miles per gallon—not bad for a car that weighs almost 5,000 pounds. (By the way, the V6 of the S400 is plenty strong for the Autobahn.)

With much stricter speed limits in the US, it’s reasonable that fuel economy results will be even better. But saving fuel and money is not the first concern for buyers of this car. The buyer of the S400 hybrid is probably just as interested in pairing the Mercedes three-pointed star emblem with a hybrid badge, to demonstrate a combined interest in luxury, refinement, and green status. Mercedes claims that the S400 is the “CO2 champion in the luxury class,” emitting a relatively low 186 grams of carbon per kilometer.

As the hybrid version of the Benz flagship S-Class sedan, the S400 is powered by a mild hybrid system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine. The hybrid system allows Mercedes to maintain its high-power profile, while using a V6 instead of a V8 or V12. The electric-gas combo provides a total output of 295 horsepower, channeled through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Benz is particularly proud of what it refers to as “compact” batter technology. Engineers made this hybrid system as well-packaged and light as possible. (Mercedes-Benz was able to fit the entire pack into the same space, at the right-hand base of the windshield, that previously housed the car’s standard lead-acid 12-Volt starter battery.) The S400 weighs only about 120 pounds more than the standard S-Class.

Driving Manners
The S400 drives much smaller than it is. Cutting through the tight twisties of Germany’s Black Forest, this hybrid cornered flatly and with confidence. It is as nimble and agile as its gas-powered counterpart. Stability comes from Active Body Control, an active suspension that continually adapts the suspension tuning to the current driving situation. The S400 features Torque Vectoring Brake, as well as Crosswind Stabilization, both enhancing the sure-footedness of the car. Other high-tech advancements include a pre-collision system, adaptive high beam assist, lane keep assist, and radar-based cruise control.

The cabin of the car is as plush as the standard S-Class. It shares all the same luxury features including a new split-view driver interface, which allows the front passenger to watch a movie without distracting the driver. There’s also a “Night View Assist” feature that detects pedestrians on the road ahead. The only interior difference is the S400’s hybrid gauge showing the flow of power between engine, battery, and regenerative braking.

The S400 shares the look of the S-Class. Signs of its recent facelift include a more aero grille, revised LED lighting at the front and back, and new mirrors, tailpipes, and wheels. The Mercedes Benz S400 hybrid is a luxurious, fuel-efficient saloon with lots of driving appeal. With its steep purchase price, it’s obviously not for everyone—but it is one more option for uncompromising affluent buyers seeking a slightly greener ride.
