2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Fuel Economy Ratings

The EPA has released the fuel economy ratings for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid.

The EPA predicts that S400 drivers should achieve 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway. The S400's fuel economy is significantly better than the V8 powered S550 that only manages 14 city and 22 highway. Even the smaller C350 only gets 17 city and 25 highway.
:)

That's way less than the 23 33 that was bantied around in the press. Pretty disappointing I'd say.

Vik888 07-30-2009 01:35 AM

However, the "new" EPA standards are VERY conservative.

I've averaged 27mpg highway in my E550. Thats pretty far away from the EPA's highway estimate.

what did LS600hL get? Thats the comparison you should be doing.

20 mpg city
22 mpg highway

Also, remember the S400 is NOT tuned for fuel economy like Toyota's cars. The hybird system has an entirely different role in the S400 than it does in the Toyota's cars.

That's pretty much what I get on my S550. I would say 24-25 mpg at 70mph. I live in a rural area so all my mileage is highway miles.

Vik888 08-15-2009 07:44 PM

I think everyone will agree the EPA "new" method is ultra conservative. I do better than the EPA figures all the time. The only way I get the fuel economy bad enough to hit the EPA figures is to drive extremely aggressively.

Doctodd33 08-15-2009 09:42 PM

the EPA ratings are meant to make money by charging you gas guzzler prices......i get 27mpg highway @70mph.....also depends on how you drive

Vik888 08-15-2009 11:24 PM

Well, believe it or not, even with the "new" ratings, my 2008 E550 was not charged GG tax.

I was just telling some ignorant person that I've seen 28mpg w/ my E550 on the freeway in the W211 forum and of course they didn't believe me. So if you can do 27mpg, I don't see with the same engine and tranny why a lighter car like the E550 can't do 28mpg.

Anyway, glad to gear those numbers. Hopefully getting a S400 or S550 in a month or two. :y

I second that. I just picked up a 2009 E550 and I'm getting 26/27 mpg on even short highway trips and the car isn't even broken in yet. F the EPA.

Well being that the LS600h is a 5 second zero to sixty car the 7.6 second S400 seems a bit slow. So lets say the LS600h beats the S400 pretty well if these current EPA figures hold up. I also recall the LS600h getting pretty low EPA ratings so I am not sure the 20/22 will hold up for that car. If so MB should hit the drawing board once again!

I'd be curious to know why the official EPA numbers vary so much from the original 23/33 M-B estimate. Surely M-B knew how the revised circuit would be run and would have modeled their testing for US-spec vehicles on the new EPA circuit/rules.

FWIW,

S400 = 8.1L/100 kilometers on the European fuel-consumption circuit...29.04 mpg

S350 CDI diesel on the European market = 7.7L/100 kilometers...30.55 mpg (also slower acceleration numbers than the S400)

The European rumor sites whisper that the next generation electric motor will pump out 60 HP which should approach S550 territory for 0 - 100 km/h.

Why not S250CDI for fuel economy?
http://www.worldcarfans.com/10908252...linder-s-class

5.9 l/100 km, less than 40 mpg (39.9 if I got it right).

Didn't include that engine's figures since I can't see it being even remotely considered for the USA market.

5.9 l/100 km, not bad. I can imagine refuelling and Distance would show 2000Km :)

I've had my S400 for 1,500 miles. I'm averaging 21.5 mpg with a 28 mph speed average. A little disappointing.

s5benzo 03-19-2010 01:58 PM

20 -22 mpg isnt bad for the ls600h...its a 5.0l v8 compared to a 3.5l v6. s400 is a big car maybe they should of made it a v8 hybrid :D

Sounds pretty good to me for such a slow average speed...

rtx2008 03-21-2010 08:51 AM

Yes. I have to get used to the idea that unlike hybrids that can run on electric only at slow speeds and get higher mileage at slower speeds the S400 is more like a normal setup where the higher mileage is at highway speeds.

S400 and Lexus LS600 have entirely different role indeed. Take a look at this article: Mercedes-Benz S400 vs. Lexus LS600h . It actually connects the dots of Hybrids history, evolution and purpose. Also, clears some existing myths about who invented 1st Hybrid. Very interesting...
