Can't get ipod to work with s600 aux connection

I have the 07 s600 designo with the ipod connection in the glovebox. I went to the audio menu in the command center and selected aux but I just get a blank screen. The ipod says that it is connected to a device. Am I missing a step? I don't get any kind of error message.

Are you using the basic AUX interface with the 3.5 mm jack or do you have the actual iPod connector in the car? iPod should operate via the cluster menu on a pre-facelift 221. The basic AUX would not show anything more at the Comand display, you should hear the music if you stare playing something with your iPod.

It has the actual iPod connector in the glove box. If the Aux is selected in the command center, and there is a song playing on the iPod while I plug it in, the song stops playing from the iPod speakers but nothing comes from the car speakers.

The iPod doesn't show up command center, it shows up on the Speedometer display. You have to switch the Speedo to Audio Mode. Then it is a combo of both the left/right (volume and phone) buttons to control the iPod.

The steps I use:

Select Playlist on iPod.
Select song and press play on iPod.
Plug iPod into connector in glove box.
Select Aux from the Audio menu.
Should play through the speakers.
You can go to the audio tab on the driver speedo console and use your up/down buttons on steering wheel to change the tune within the playlist.

The only thing I have never figured out is how to change the playlist on the iPod. I assume this cannot be done, it has to be done on the iPod itself. Is this correct?

Off topic but why on earth do people want to play MP3 music from iPod when it is this complicated. A lot easier to use the memory card slot (even burning DVDs sounds simpler).

Agreed, sorta.

I have a playlist that has about 100 songs. Use it longer trips, never bother around town.

Thanks Irie and Kevin... I got it to work, it's just weird how there's like a 30 second delay when trying to access the ipod through the steering wheeling. Is the ipod suppose to charge while it is plugged in? Mine doesn't.

Diesel - the reason for using an ipod over a memory card is once you take your memory card out of your car good luck trying to listen to it without plugging into another device

It is an S600 and you cannot afford a dedicated memory card in the car?

I guess it is about a single device carrying all your music?

A good CF card at the PCMCIA would respond very fast if you leave it to the car (there is a minor delay when it is first plugged if it is full of music but he interface is 1000 times faster, perhaps someone knows the exact figure).

I'd get stressed if I had to "play" with the iPod every time entering and leaving the car, just to be able to play some favourite music every now and then. I assume iPod is just so important for some that they accept this hassle and the clumsy interface to access the player. I certainly accept that different owners have different preferences but sometimes (perhaps not only sometimes ) I have trouble understanding where they come from.

That's pretty strange. My iPhone starts playing immediately once I plug it in, and I can pretty much navigate the playlists through COMAND as well. No special "playing" is needed.

I guess the same could be said for a person that spends time managing their CF card. I don't want to bother and I only use my iPod for longer trips, not trips to the store or office.

Mercedes-Benz
MB has an updated cable to charge the newer iPod Touch and iPhone because they now use different pins to charge than the older gen iPods. Dealer may do it under warranty.

Regarding Charging, you can get a new cable from Mercedes Benz, or get the scosche adapter at any Apple Store. I have the Scosche adapter that I use with my iPhone to charge it.

I wanted views from iPod users, this is nothing new, I explained myself on my earlier post that this could be one likely argument to prefer iPhone only.

But you seem to accept that you don't bother attaching iPod for short trips. Fine if you don't bother about your personal titles on short trips but from the memory card they would be always available.

Life is full of compromises and as said, we have to accept different personal preferences. Myself I don't have the time to load music on an iPod and I don't want to carry multiple devices with me, my phone is my MP3 player and even if I could use my phone in the car via the AUX cable, I prefer the memory card. I understand this would not suit Apple fans.

Thanks for the link on the adapter, I will have to try it out.
I do not see a slot for a memory card, or else I may have gone with that option.
I hate apple, but the s600 came with the ipod connection so I didn't have much of a choice. I usually use my phone (blackberry) as an mp3 player too

I don't think I understood this. The Comand unit must have a slot for a memory card, or actually a slot for a PCMCIA adapter that can host any kind of a memory card.

I understand you would be fine once you got the info to make the iPod charging work but I just wanted to clear this memory slot issue (for myself or for yourself).
