air matic suspension, malfunction

I have a 2008 s550
"Vehicle level controll malfunction" shows up on dash. Airmatic suspension not working. Went through some water puddles, the next day
malfunction message comes on. Asked the Mercedes dealer what might be wrong, they want to replace everything.

I got Fault code : 5283 and 4544 with coment " recovery time during filling of central reservoir is too long"

Any ideas what is wrong and how to fix?

thanks Ray

The fault code (text, I did not check the numbers) refers to a bad compressor that isn't capable any more to fill up the reservoir pressure quick enough. It could also be a leak that kills the compressor efficiency (and kills it physically too after a while because the pump needs to work more often).

Thanks for the reply. I will put in a new compressor and hope there are no leaks in the system. Maybe I can find a compressor from a Co. other than Mercedes for less money

I have a lot of success with http://rebuildmastertech.com (they offer lifetime warranty on their products). I have replaced all 4 struts and the air compressor on my car over a year ago and have no problems.

Any updates on this, I know its an old thread.

I get the similar code using my LAUNCH CRP229 scanner, there have been random times when the whole front drops all the way down.

Almost everytime i drive, after some time it tells me the air suspension is malfunctioning.

In reality, this is not a bad idea!

The problem is not due to compressor, common problem is air reservoir tank, if you clean the tank you will see the crack on the tank, which lead to air leak.

I recently replaced 3 struts, compressor pump, and relay for S350 2010. Done ~ 70kmiles. Earlier I got an airmatic malfunction hence these were replaced and checked for air leakage as well. Now after driving about 1000 miles, malfuction appears. But If I restart it disappears. Again it reappears after few days. Don't understand. I noticed the mechanic has given more 5mm more than the usual gap between the tyre and the body in the rear, could this be the issue?

Much appreciate any info.

as I mentioned, most probably of the problem is air leaks on the reservoir tank, see photo below and you can repair the tank or buy a new one.

I apologize for bringing up this old thread. I had a similar issue with my vehicle recently and the reason why the suspension malfunctioned with the up arrow came out and it turns out that the ADS Valve is faulty, the hard part is I had to replace the air strut too to replace the ADS Valve. I came across an in-depth article that may be worth reading. Search for "Mercedes-Benz Air Suspension Malfunction + UP Arrow on YOUCANIC" and you will see an article that goes over common causes and possible fixes. You can read about it yourself. I hope this information can assist someone else with a similar issue.
