S320 CDI w221 2009
Angry 722.9 GTronic auto trans gearbox on s320 (09) w221

I have come to breaking point and hope somebody can recommend a any transmission specialist near North London. My car went in to limp mode (stuck in first & reverse only) I had indie garage change ATM & filter. But car still in limp mode. Took car to star diagnostics at another indie garage it showed 4 x solenoid valves needed changing. So we order 4 valves from mercs & fit them in, at first gear change from 1 to 2 was hard but smoothed out over 6 hours drive. The next day I was back to limp mode from cold. Went back to garage star diagnoses shows all is OK, and no other problems shown. Now it only drives in limp mode gear 1 or if switch off and on again engages in gear 6, so barely drivable. Please can anyone offer some advise or guidance besides taking to main dealer?

I have found a garage that claim they have a repair kit for this problem, does any one have any experience with these.

I bought a s/h 2009 W211 E320 V6 diesel with the 722.9 gearbox.
It started to go into limp mode, sometimes when it was switched of and on again it would work perfect for a few hours.
I bought a gearbox service kit from MB and queried the colour of the oil (green) ATF FE fully synthetic and new level insert (also green).
MB assured me that it was correct for the 722.9 g tronic gearbox
Serviced the gearbox and noticed the old oil was red ATF.
I had the old TCM module sent away for complete overhaul and update.
Refitted everything as per the book, car drove fine for 200 miles then started to refuse to change up from 3rd, touch sideways on the gear lever and it changes up or down.
Any ideas anyone ? beautiful car spoiled by this frustrating problem.

How did you set the ATF level when you put it back together? If the fluid level is incorrect that could give you issues.

On the 722.9 gearbox there is an adapter that threads into the drain plug.
Inside the gearbox is a green plastic tube, when re- filling the gearbox you screw the adapter into the drain plug. attach a hose, at the other end of the hose is a funnel.
Thread this up through the engine compartment so the funnel is higher than the gearbox, refill with green ATF FE oil,(recommended and supplied by Mercedes) approx. 9 & half litres.
Remove the hose from the drain plug adapter when the gearbox is full.
Replace the drain plug.
After a short test drive, re-programme the gearbox.

When checking the correct ATF level you need to bring the oil up to a set temp, and then allow the excess oil to drain out of the pipe that you referred to. Then the oil level is correct. How do you know you have the correct oil amount in the trans? If there was any left in the trans or torque converter you could have to much oil, thus causing some of your shifting issues? Just a thought

We drained the torque converter.
We brought the oil up to temp before refilling.
Once the gearbox was full we ran the car through the gears and up to temps before checking the level and bringing it back up to full again.
Its very annoying because the rest of the car is perfect.

I think this is the clue to your problem. From everything I read, the early (yellow fluiid ATF 4134) 722.9 transmission was used in the W211 and not the late (blue fluid ATF 7134) model. You can easily tell by looking at the transmission pan, check the details in this thread;

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w221...7g-tronic.html

I believe you have the incorrect fluid as there are two revisions of the 722.9 with respect to fluid.

I've checked this out with Mercedes Benz.
The P.O's Mercedes service records show that the fluid used in an earlier service was fully synthetic ATF.(red).
I've read the MB service bulletin regarding the change in floor pan profile and fluid colour from red to green/blue.
I contacted Mercedes in the UK for a gearbox service kit quoting the VIN number of the car, they looked it up on Mercedes build records and they assure me that the package they supplied was correct for the 722.9 g tronic box.(green level tube and green/blue ATF FE fluid).
Having seen the work Mercedes dealer in France charged the PO for, over 2,300 Euro, and failed to carry out (engine & cabin air filters virtually clogged, fuel filter still original after 119,000 kms).
I've know now I've inherited a problem from the P.O's dodgy Mercedes dealership, but having spent quite a bit bringing it up to standard I'd like the car to run as it should without costing me a further fortune in repairs.

If your car was made before july 21st 2010 it takes red ATF fluid
after it is green i believe which is ATF FE.

sounds like it does it because of the fluid

The car was built in 2009 W211 model but we've discovered many features from the W212 model incorporated..
Having run Mercedes trucks in our family business since the mid 70's we're familiar with these anomalies. The Germans are never wrong 'Alles in Ordnung', when you push them hard they generally say 'Ya I see vat u mean' in a very quiet voice, sometimes they can't see the wood from the trees, but for all that their commercial products are profit makers.
Incidentally I've owned Mercedes cars for the same length of time with a 3 year gap when I bought a BMW, when I was buying another new truck they offered a demonstration car at 'knock down' price, with only 25 miles on the clock !

When we serviced the gearbox using red ATF fluid, the problem persisted, we went to a Mercedes UK dealer (the French dealership will not give any information) and asked them to check the construction records.
They came back and categorically stated that the 722.9 G Tronic box should be serviced with the green fluid.
During this service procedure we took the opportunity and removed the TCM module and had it completely rebuilt and verified the valves we perfect.
I have all the technical bulletins from Mercedes.
Next step, we have bought a Mercedes service/ reprogramming module to ensure all systems are perfect.
