I have a 2013 s550 that is noisy on startup and makes a rattling sound when it starts up. I just got it Feb. 14, 2015 for Valentines gift from Husband. My husband took it to the local MB dealership and they said it was normal. Well I'm not buying it, because you shouldn't have a car that you are embarrassed to startup because it sounds as if it's going to fall apart. My husband gets upset when I say something about it. I'm just scared that something is going to go out that's very costly after the warranty expires. I just have a bad feeling about this noise.

278 engine it is normal to have ticking noise from high-pressure pump and/or fuel injectors however, if you are experiencing rattling noise: up to engine # 30 073273 check valves & chain tensioners need replacement; from 073274 up to 103675 optimized tensioners were installed at production, check valves need replacement - reference bulletin LI05.10-P-056435.

Check your PM.

I've heard a funny rattle around the rear passenger side the other morning when I started mine up. It lasted for about a min the went away.

Take your car to the dealership. Find another 13 s550 on the lot. Start it. Does it sound the same? No worries. Is it quieter? Give the keys to your car to the service manager and tell him to make your car "sound like that one".

Thanks now I don't feel as if I'm crazy. Because my car sounds exactly like
the car on YouTube. I am happy I came across this site and became a member.
I showed everything to my husband and he's calling the dealership in the morning
to make another appointment with all the information that I have gathered thanks to Konigstiger. I'm going with him this time and will do exactly like alx said and see if they have
any 2013's on the lot like mine. I'm not buying the it sounds like that crap. We had a E430 and
it was loud but not rattling like something's falling apart.

Suggestion: Have the dealer keep the car overnight. Have the service manager and shop foreman stand in front of the car with the hood open, and start the car. Depending on the VIN of your car, have them perform the work per the bulletin provided by konigstiger.

The noise will be more prominent on a cold start. I had the same issue--the check valves and "optimized" tensioners helped.

Reading through German car sites, this seems like a common issue with the early bi-turbo motors. Starts out with cold start rattle and progresses to rattle at idle when warm. Needs to be addressed.

Lately, every new motor generation seems to have some significant timing chain issues. 2007/2008 550 timing chain sprocket wear and idler issue. Now this. Once they get them reliable, they change design and the learning process begins again.

I might have the same or a similar problem. Mine is growling type sound and it only lasts for a few seconds and then is over. I also have noticed that occassionally it "slips" when starting and takes a second to start.

Can someone please send me this service bulletin?

I may start a thread about my issues if they don't seem the same. Mine is also an older S550. I cannot believe she is getting this old but my S class is a 2007 model. It's been a great car and I have pretty low miles at 73k but I am starting to get nervous about it...

MY 2013 MERCEDES HAS A VERY VERY LOUD RATTLE AT STARTUP, THEN QUIETS DOW A LITTLE, BUT NOT MUCH, I ALSO WAS TOLD THIS IS NORMAL, MERCEDES REPLACED THE TENSIONERS ON SERVICE BULLETIN BUT THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE LOUDER NOW. ANY SUGGESTIONS MY 08 S550 STILL RUNS AND SOUND PERFECT, THIS ONE IS LIKE A TANK... VERY DISCOURAGING, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF MERCEDES CAN HAVE A SPECIAL TECHNICAL LINE FOR SUPPORT. WHAT DO YOU THINK KONIGSTIGER ???

Had MB do the TSB on my car for the noise. Will be picking it up today and report if the noise is fixed. I never noticed it until I saw a thread on here about it and then I could not unhear it!

I can confirm after performing the folllowing TSB the noise is gone.

I feel the car runs stronger, probably added another 50 HP as well :P j/k

TH, what year is your car? And what years does the TSB address?

Also, where can get get a list of all the tsb's for the w221??

Its by vin number and not model year.

Took my 2012 S550 to my local M Dealer due to that startup noise and gave them the bulletin LI05.10-P-056435 and it was repaired at no cost. Tensioners and other items were replaced.

I have a '07 S550 & absolutely love it. Just fix what needs fixed. Car is fully depreciated anyways enjoy it! I converted my air struts to Strutmaster Springs. Re glued some speakers for blown sound. Noise you might hear is the secondary air pump $80 Ebay only runs for 1min on cold start, bearing go out in them after 90k
