In the market for a 2014 S-Class - questions

Have to agree. I now have a 2015 black on black AMG E class as a loaner. It's very nice looking with the AMG accents and chrome lower lips, but the interior feels cheap and it doesn't ride anything like the S. It's nice, $66,000 sticker, but it's no S. Makes you feel good.

It's just a pain when it's that far away, when the other dealer is so close, but I may want to try out a new 2015 S next time for fun.

Yikes. I guess I threw some shade at the CL, which rides exactly like an S because it kind of is. Just discovered that the CL 550 got the new bi turbo V8 a model year sooner than the 221, in 2011. That'll put them well within the budget next summer when it's time to trade the 2010.
Damn Mike you gave up on the 640 already? I was gonna buy a 650GC when I was looking for my car but grew tired of the brand and wanted something different, however; that car is amazing. Btw, the CL is a sweet coupe and if you do get it make sure you put those cl63 wheels on it!

Where the S-class sedan seemed to take a step backwards in styling when going from the W221 to the W222, the CL made a giant leap forward inside and out with the new S coupe. The new coupe is 10x better looking than the W222 sedan, IMO.

I've seen a few in person and they don't do it for me. From a 3/4 rear they look very much like my kid's CC. They also seem to ride really high relative to the wheels. It's like there's 4 extra inches over the tires. Very refined and well built though.

I've seen the new coupe in person and it is a an exotic looking car and sexy as hell too,but the facelift CL Mike wants is also sexy as hell, especially the AMG models.

My indie shops owner has a new S63 coupe and a new S63 sedan both in Diamond White. Given how much they cost and how powerful they are the exterior design seems too restrained, and the interiors seem out of character for a performance car. Too pretty and fussed over.
I don't think I'll ever come to like the twin Galaxy Tab instrument/infotainment set up. Something about the tach especially, seeing all that power rendered as a Gran Turismo graphic is just wrong.
Bad Germans! Very bad!!
Now if I had the money would I own both those cars? Oh hell yes! I'm critical but I'm not stupid.

I find that both the W222 sedan and C217 ride lower than their predecessors. Stock height is barely 2 fingers between the top of tire and wheel arch on ours (see pic)
Maybe the coupes you saw were raised?

The W221 simply has an older version of the dual screen setup. Smaller screens but the logic of a virtual speedo is the same concept of the W222.
What gives?

What gives? The new dash looks like it was designed by Nintendo. I understand the infotainment system having this treatment....but not the gauge cluster. Looks too gamer to me.

It's not the W221 sports real gauges either. Center screen, just lower res and smaller, but a screen nonetheless. That the W221 cluster wasn't completely screen-based was primarily a cost/tech consideration.
Unless your beef is strictly with the design, not the digital aspect. The old, neutral gauge look from MB seems to go away, wether it's a digital or real...
If you don't like the gauge design, just make your own. It's an image file that can be swapped

Likewise, the infotainment screen is integrated into the dash in a conventional way, getting a small binnacle out-building of its own.
In the 222 it's as if the designers said screw it...we're not going to bother pretending, or trying to integrate a rectangular shape into a more organic, rounded design to create an illusion of the classic binnacle contours.
Instead, they decided to celebrate the screen and all of its flatness and squareness. It's very bold, and if they succeed in pulling it off, it frees them up moving forward to be able to use larger screens as they are without trying to integrate them. Maybe seeing the monstrosity Tesla gets away with emboldened them. It opens up a lot of design possibilities. I totally get it, but I don't like it.

The difference to me is that in the 221 there's a very convincing attempt to make the speedo display look like the other analog gauges. The effect is subtle, and the screen is set in a normal gauge binnacle with other, analog, gauges.

When I got our SL550 (R231) after driving the R230 for 11 years (SL600, SL55) I was shocked how different the gauges looked. Not in a good way.
It wasn't even the cluster itself, which looks quite good actually, but the super-bright red colors at night. Felt somehow un-sophisticated (see fuzzy pic)...
But I am pro-tech and cars become smarter and safer with each iteration. I have been lucky to walk away from a couple 130+mph accidents.
So I go with the new. After all, I haven't driven a car yet that didn't have a few design or functional elements that I didn't like, bothered me or couldn't have been done better.

Yeah, I drove a new SL (exact same color combo as yours actually) and I loved the amount of detail and "authenticity" of the gauges. Really the whole interior presentation is terrific in that car. I even liked the stumpy little gear selector. What turned me off...and this is so stupid...was the audio system. It was just so thin and dull. I did some research and discovered there was a B&O option so I was encouraged. Then I did some more research and discovered nobody liked the B&O system either. So I gave up on the SL. If I had the means to have the roadster as a weekend car I'd love one though.
So here's what I'm getting at with the 222:
See all of those gradients and half tones...the fake "chrome" bezels...all of that stuff looks cartoonish to me. Not to mention the obvious irony here...you replace a three dimensional analog gauge cluster with a two dimensional screen as an upgrade, then bust your nuts trying to make the two dimensional gauges look three dimensional again.
I honestly do not think I'll like these 222's right up to the very moment I can afford one

Re. the W222, while I can agree with you in theory, the whole interior along the ambient lighting (which I love) just works together. I don't even think of the display as being digital.
Especially going out at night
And I love the SL. That car is faster than the SL600 and the SL55 even without a tune.
Frankly, seeing what you have done with the S-Class audio, working an audio upgrade on the SL should be a piece of cake for you
Here is our current SL. This is my favorite interior combo...

Yeah I took one out. It's got some 222 bits in it, identical seat controls, Burmester audio, optional air ride. Vast improvement over its predecessor in terms of style and refinement. Bringing over the A variants allowed MB to jump the C up a segment or two and they made the most of it. Again, nothing else in the MB line drives like an S.

The shift upmarket in the C, which is really well executed, puts the car closer to the existing E if anything. It has me wondering if the upcoming E will then nudge closer to the S. If so, the next E coupe might be worthy of consideration. If it's a smaller version of the S Coupe but a little less lavish inside I'd be interested.
