Driver Side Multicontour Seat Question

Hi everyone,

New to the forum here as I'll be picking up my 2008 S550 4matic tomorrow!

I'm very excited and have a 3 year Assurant warranty ready to go but before then I just had a quick question on the multicontour seats during my test drive.

The passenger side works perfectly but the drivers side has an issue with the side bolsters in that they do not inflate. They are at 0 and I can go ahead and set it to something else but nothing will happen and it will revert to 0. The strange thing is that I cannot hear anything inflating so I'm hoping its a simple software glitch.

It's the same deal with the dynamic seat feature, the passenger side inflates accordingly but the drivers side does nothing.

Other bolsters work just fine and the massage function works as well, its just the side bolsters that don't seem to cooperate.

Thanks in advance and excited to join the community!

driver side is broken, either the pump died or the bladders split.

Thanks, are the individual pumps for each bladder/front seat? Seems like the others work (shoulder, thigh, etc)and only the side bolsters don't on the driver's seat.

Not sure if they are all individual, but certainly the seat-back sides/bolsters can leak while the others do not. I had that experience.

I would advise having the seller fix them or credit you the repair amount. Though the Assurant warranty is good, it does exclude pre-existing conditions.

Got it that was what I was fearing, it is currently being sold by a BMW dealer so obviously they were a bit clueless when I asked them why it was acting that way.

That said, I'm surprised that its a leak as it doesn't even attempt to inflate the bolster vs inflating a bit and having it leak away which is why I originally thought it was a software/fuse issue.

Anyway, any idea how much this repair costs?

I think when they leak, they behave sporadically.

Hell, even an MB dealer won't always understand the seats. When I took mine in for repair, they told me they worked fine. I had to insist they do not (they would hold air for a couple minutes).

Repair for me at MB dealership was about $1100. $750 parts; $380 labor. My Assurant warranty covered it.

Very helpful, thanks!

Also, I'm getting quoted about $5,200 for 3 years, 30k miles on a 2008 S550 4matic with 60k miles, is this too much?

I bought my '08 in October of 2015, with about 62000 miles. Warranty was 3 years, 36k miles for $4300. Maybe the price has gone up given that the car is 6 months older now. If the quote is from Assurant (or your CU), I guess it is what it is.

If you're not married to this particular car, and the warranty is a priority, could try pricing the warranty for a newer MY or lower mileage. May save some warranty money, could cover a bit of the increase in price likely with the newer/low mileage car.

Pretty similar situation then, went direct to assurant which directed me through carchex. Might explain the pricing difference.

Definitely like the car, cool color combo I rarely see (dark blue on beige) and has got a good number of options. Only thing missing for me would be distronic but thats something I can live without.

With the seats, I think I can live without the side bolsters for now as the main thing for me is the extendable bottom cushion. My current A6 causes some knee and back pain on long journeys.

For sure - if you like the car and the dollar amounts work for you, the Assurant warranty is a good one. I likely overpaid for my car, but it had unique colors and options, so I'm happy.

For reference, it was about 3 months, 1500 miles after purchasing the warranty that the side bolsters in my car had to be replaced. Assurant didn't bat an eye.

Good to hear, you have the "Premium" coverage right? According to the sample contract thats the most comprehensive one possible.

I believe so. I got the top offering. Zero deductible. Exclusionary.

Oh, and my warranty may have been $4500ish. I can't remember precisely. So, may not be that far off from yours.

I had a similar problem with the driver side bolster, but when the service department hooked it up to STAR/DAS/XENTRY computer to take care of an issue I had with COMAND about a year ago, it fixed the issue and my active bolsters work great now. Might want to get it checked at an MB service department.

Interesting, looks like I can't rule out a software glitch i guess. When i get the car I plan on doing some sort of a reset to get rid of any old settings etc.

Anyone know an easy way to do that?

That would be great if it was just a software issue. I hope that's the case.

As for re-setting - you can restore all settings to factory, erasing prior settings.

But, "settings" being those things "set-able" by the user via the interface and menu options available to the user without need for special programming equipment or external interface.

The programming mentioned by KNBS550 is only available via external connection to MB proprietary software.

Put another way, you're only allowed to go so deep into the systems without the Benz software hooked up. In the case of the dynamic-seats, everything you can control is available to you in the seat settings menu. And dynamic seats on/off, side-bolster adjustment is not something connected to or controllable via anything in addition to the seat settings menu. So, if you tried to turn it on and it didn't come on.... well, that's really all the software control you have available to you.
