Steering column just stopped going in n out?

Just went to carwash, lifted the steering wheel up a bit with the switch, got back in the car and now it doesnt go up or down. does come in and out. any reset? or am i headed back to the dealer?

Have someone pull fault codes using MB DAS, motor/shaft “may” need replacement best case scenario may simply need to normalized (taught in) using MB DAS.

1bad540 02-05-2017 05:24 PM

shoot would that even trigger a fault? Car still has cpo warty hopefully covered.

ItalianJoe1 02-06-2017 06:30 PM

Is it all the way up? If you move the switch do you hear any attempt to move at all?

They regularly jam in the top position, usually you can hit the steering wheel with your hand downward while actuating the switch and it will release. There are software updates for the older cars so they don't stick so tight at the top of the adjustment.

The motors do also fail, we replace them all the time under warranty.

it moves in and out its kinda low but not all the way down, i do hear a click but no movement. any thoughts? Is that covered under cpo?

ItalianJoe1 02-06-2017 11:16 PM

I believe it's covered under CPO, take it in and see. It should be.

It moves in and out because that's a separate motor. There's one for vertical and one for depth.

I just had mine replaced. $2500 covered under third party warranty.

My wife says that about me sometimes. I understand your frustration.

Had the problem on my '14 ML350. Dealer "fixed" it but it happened again. I posted here about the problem and got this response. Now it's working again.

They must have replaced the whole column. There is a repair kit for some models that is just the drive or motor, and it's not nearly that expensive.

kn51 02-07-2017 08:46 PM

I find it funny how going through a carwash basically makes the car dash light up like a casino in Vegas.

You have water getting somewhere it isn't supposed to if that's the case. I'd avoid that carwash until you find the source of the leak, or it can get very expensive, very fast.

That's what they said they did.

1bad540 02-08-2017 08:12 AM

so tried the in and out a few times and still nothing!! I hear the relay click but no movement. Ill update as im dropping off the car in the morning.

1bad540 02-09-2017 09:44 AM

dropped off the car, looks like its the motor in the column. Report back after fix. looks like cpo is covering too.

1bad540 02-10-2017 06:34 PM

so wasnt the motor there saying now needs a whole column at 3k not covered under my cpo. what a pos. looks like the alpina is closer than i thought.

teksurv 02-10-2017 07:10 PM

Wow, I'm curious why it is not covered, any clarity?

The third party warranty I have covered the same exact repair. It was also $500 less than your quote.

I'm curious why the entire column needs to be replaced. Is the original unit prone to failure?

1bad540 02-11-2017 10:24 AM

No idea serves me right for buying an over priced short warty thru benz. They said they changed the motor and column still doesnt move, so nxt step is the whole column? Im sure my indy would have fixed it in 1 hour... w no parts needed. Now I have to fight w benz no way im paying 3k to fix that. ill trade the car and eat the 3 that way.

1bad540 02-15-2017 08:24 AM

so benz goodwilled the repair thru my cpo... lets see hopefully get it back today. there going to scam me for an alignment too while its there,
