BMW 745Li Vs.W221 S550
I'm Finally Deciding To Part Ways With My BMW 745Li I Wanted To Keep It But I Think I Would Like The S550 A Whole Lot Better By It Being Newer & Possibly More Reliable Than The E65/E66 7Series Ive Had A Few Mercs Though So I'm Not New With MB Vehicles I Had A CLK 350 Cabroilet A C230/Sport A CLS 55 AMG & A CL 550 Although I Love The E65/E66 (2002-2008) Which Is A Beautiful Car Inside & Out I Just HATE Bringing It To The Shop I Was Wondering If The 07-13 S Class Were More Dependable Than The BMW 7 Series? Or Were They The Same In The Terms Of Reliability? I'm Aware That The S Class Will Be Expensive To Maintain But Will It Be In The Shop Less Or Just As Much As The Bimmer? I Maintained This 7 Series Quite Meticulously Too I'm Just Trying To Stack It Up Against The S Class To See What Vehicle Is Better

I have a 2012 S550 that I purchased in 2015 with 24K miles on it. I did spend about 3K for the Mercedes extended warranty and I think I have used about half that value in claims in the 20 months I have owned it. It seems to be a fairly reliable car but I am a stickler with keeping my cars up. I have replaced the brakes, battery and tires but that is all normal wear stuff. Where this car can really sting you is if something major decides to take a puke and there is a lot of stuff that can break. I would not drive one without a warranty but that is just me. It's a lot of car for the money but you either need a warranty or the financial ability to cut a check for big money in a bad situation. I looked at the 7 series before I purchased my S and its just my opinion but I think there is no comparison from the 7 series to the S. BMW uses a ton of plastic panels and dated looking guages and the ride quality is nothing like the S. The only issue I have with mine is that I could never go back to another car as my daily driver and I will probably purchase another S when this one falls out of warranty.

You said you previously owned a CL550. The reliability of a W221 S class should be identical to that of your CL550 since the CL550 is really an S class coupe with identical mechanical and electrical parts.

i had a 545 which is the same engine as your 745 , and no , dont want none of the BMW's that end with 45 index.
too many issues. i ended up selling it in 2013 with ~115k miles.
and it was a 2004 545.
550 and 750 be more comparable to your S class
so
id keep the benz

I had a guy the just the other day in a brand new 7 series comes up to me and say, " I don't know why this is, but I like this car better than mine...." Guys, that white amg/black interior, pano, is damn sharp. I still love this car. He said he's always had BMW's and never saw an S that looks so sharp out of the factory.

For whatever reason BMW suffers from poor interior quality that plauges the entire lineup. This because the quality of the soft touch componets of the interior aren;t durable. I had this issue in my 3 series. I plasti dipped the center console a few years ago and never looked back.
As far as comparing the brands my opinon has been this for many years. BMW builds a better sports car in terms of driver experiance. For luxurious cruising with sporty undertones Mercedes by a country mile.
AMG and M series cars are neck in neck in pretty much every catorgory.
Sorry for the typos.
