Navigation/Maps NA update for W221

Hey guys,

I found quite a few topics on the subject but some have old info or even broken links. I'm looking to find out what's the latest update that we can do on the W221 and perhaps a refreshed how-to. I know there are some discs on eBay but I'm not necessarily looking for an update from 2011-2012 on my 2008 S550, mainly because some of the areas that I drive to/through are recently built (2014+). What's the most recent piece of software that we can get for this car?

Also, I found some updates as a torrent but they were for EU maps. If I would have been interested in EU maps, would that worked? Do we only need to install using MB discs? What can go wrong? What if MB doesn't care providing updates anymore? Did someone else picked up the slack?

I've noticed that I can still see traffic updates (yellow, red cars on the map) so somehow the system still connects to something and gets updates?

Thank you!
And it looks like eBay has them at about 1/10 of the MB site listed price. I could never understand why they ask so much for some maps updates? OK, it's an expensive car but not everything that is "related" to the car warrants an S-class price; definitely not some navigation maps updates on a piece of plastic.

I bought version 15 from a seller on eBay and the DVD worked fine to update my maps. The traffic updates are via an FM signal, I haven't found them to be that useful though I have gotten an alert about the road I was getting on being "time sensitive" or something of the sort and it was backed up..

Dear Konigstiger,

My vehicle is a UK model. I am currently using it in Pk (Pakistan).

Is there any cost effective way to update the maps for the local area?

Bobitza 01-17-2018 09:10 AM

OK, so the DVD arrived in the mail today.

DO I just pop it in and the unit will recognize it and perform the update? Are there any other steps/concerns that I need to be aware of?

According to the same link provided, it's: NTG3.5 COMAND® North America - V14.0 -- North America 2015/2016 V14.0 Edition

By the way, is there somewhere in the COMMAND menu where we can see what version of the maps we have installed?

I have updates via the eBay DVD . It's just a matter of getting the car outside and leaving the motor ringing for a half hour or so. Just load the DVD slot one and follow the prompts. My update however results in the dreaded loadi

ng navigation screen. To clear this I have to run reset each time .My dealer just checked that theyre are no firmware updates for my 2007 so I'm still looking to correct the boring problem .

I got a CD/DVD from eBay for the 2007-2009 pre-facelift W221, popped it in, wait for the installation to complete ... maps updated. No errors, codes or reset needed.

I did the same for my 2007.

Hello, I have a slightly different issue with my Navi system; I need the Maps Software (2010 S400). I had my COMAND unit repaired (see below if interested). After it was repaired, the company did tell me that I would have to take it to the dealership to re-install it. I'm wondering if installing an update would also install the original software like some computer software does or if I need the original software from the dealership first and then install the update?

About the COMAND unit...
My car was doing some funky stuff (COMAND cut in and out, battery would drain if the car wasn't started at least every other day, clock would change to different time zone). I took it to the dealership and they couldn't say for sure that it was the COMAND unit or something else that was causing the problems. The only option they gave me was to change the unit and see if that fixes the issues. The problem with that was that a new COMAND unit costs $6300.00. I didn't want to spend that much to see if that was indeed the cause. After doing to searching, I found a company in FL that repairs COMAND units for $500.00; at that price, it was worth the gamble. I sent off my unit, got it back and everything works great now (except the Navi). So,if your dealership asks you to spend $6k+ to replace the unit, don't do it. You can DIY for 1/10 the cost.

I have a 2007 S550 and I have purchased 3 disc off of ebay and my system has rejected all three. Took my car to the service shop and the guy said don't buy those disc, they are bootleg. I read about people installing them with no problem, but I can't seem to find a legit disc. (if you have a disc that worked on your car I would be willing to rent it to get my system going)

If you don't have a VIDEO option on your command, your command needs an update before you can install an updated map.

No luck finding the discs; I'll have to take mine to the dealer. If they let me keep them, I'll be happy to share.
