My 2012 S550 with 62K miles had a Check Engine light, connected a error code reader and it said 0299, "Turbo Under boost". Took it to a dealer in Dallas, they changed a pressure switch. The code was still there, but light was gone. later I found out that the Waste Gate valve rod (see pic pulled from Web), that is used to push open the turbo valve had broken. MB Manager asked me to contact the MB Customer service, not much luck!!. Complained about the poor quality of products MB puts on the car (a 6 in long, 1/4 in dia rod (see pic) breaking causing major engine repair !).. Service dept says they have seen these failures at 10K miles in vehicles too.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem in the MB s550 Turbo Engines leading to Turbo failures and also if there was any recall on the MB Turbos ?. 2012 is the year when MB installed Turbo engine in S550 model. Dealer is asking $9000 to fix it, does it sound reasonable? They say it needs a new Turbo and the engine has to be de-mounted to change the Turbo.

I noticed in one of the threads in this forum, one dealer quoting $5K for this repair (in case warranty did not cover for the customer) for replacing Turbo. Can this cause turbo failure and eventually smoke coming out of tail pipes?.
Afraid it will need a turbo failure, what is reasonable repair cost for the Turbo failure? Notice several Turbo failure videos for Sprinter.
First time posting, please share your thoughts. . Regards
