S class 550 4 matic
I was in used car business. Older vehicles. I resold 2 w126. 420 sel. And a560 sel. I have seen at auction many Mercedes, but afraid of the horror stories I have seen and heard. I did sell the above models quickly. I love that body style. This week I drove a 550 sedan. 2007. Fell in love. I’m thinking the best route is CPO. With a extended warranty.
Please advise on the pitfalls to avoid buying, or repairing a Benz. Thanks. HoJo

I have an 07 S550 for about a year now and still loving it...
I found the following two things, the most useful advice or criteria in the decision to buy a W221:
1. Do an inspection before buying to see if the car has major issues. The inspection must be done by a MB dealer or an indie garage that is used with dealing with MBs (aka they know the codes, most common issues, etc.)
2. Find that indie garage! If you plan to keep the car for a long time or at least longer than whatever warranty you buy initially, this is paramount. I wouldn't have bought the car if I wouldn't have had this indie garage that I trust and that has experience with European brands, MB in particular. While sometimes you can't do anything about the parts prices, I do expect lower maintenance costs going forward from dealing with a lower hourly rate compared with MB dealerships (but not a lower job quality).
