Purchasing a 2010 S550 questions

Hey guys,
currently I have a 2010 BMW 750LI but it has given me nothing but problems. Just spent over 6k on it and it's still giving me issues and I might have to replace the transmission on it.
Thinking of trading it in and i found a 2010 S550 AMG package for sale near me. It has 79,000 miles with 3 owners.
is there anything I should look for when purchasing the car? Are these motors reliable? Please let me know. Thank you!

I have the same car you are purchasing with 73.6 K miles. Verify all scheduled maintenance has been performed per mfg specs.
Front struts/shocks need replacement from 50-60 K miles, also motor and transmission mounts. My ignition switch failed
around 60 K miles and took out the lane keeping camera. No motor or transmission problems.Additionally replaced stabilized bar,
Aux Battery,A/C blower motor/regulator,starter,battery. Many failures covered by CPO or extended warranty.
It is a machine with many expensive moving parts that require expensive replacement. CPO only good for cars 6 years old or less.
An extended warranty may be prudent if reasonably priced. A Car fax/maintenance records will
help determine prior reliability. But be prepared for some expensive repairs in the future.

Based on the Carfax, I would NOT purchase this vehicle. Why has it been siting unsold since the auction on 8/21/2017? Has the asking price been too high? Any vehicle that sits for over 9 months can develop many problems such as seals drying out. Is it possible that the vehicle has damage that was not discovered by Carfax? When was the brake fluid changed? When was the transmission fluid changed? Since it appears all service was performed at Mercedes dealers, any Mercedes dealer can provide you with a detailed service history.

No offense, but if you spent $6k on your current car you're probably going to spend that much on a W221 as well. In my experience there are two ways to own an out of warranty W221.

1. Take it to the dealer and just do and pay whatever they say (I wonder if that's how you got to $6k on your 7?)
2. Do a little leg work, hit forums, find better parts prices and do work yourself and/or have a good indi shop

With option 2 these cars are eminently affordable and kind of fun (doing the work yourself and solving problems is rewarding)

Good luck in your search

Imho elliot just from experience. We have a v12 s class in the family and a 2012 750li. The beemer only has 64k on it. Purchased as a cpo ...long story short my bestfriend bought it special order delivered on his birthday. My family pcked it up after he turned in from lease. Same engine as your bmw. Its had over 3 sets of injectors replaced, multiple ignition coils, Drivers seat replaced due to seat heater burning a hole frm shorting out, right rear air strut. Theres a laundry list to go on about but just comparing the qaulity , fit and finish , reliability compared to Mbz..we love the Mercedes. It has had it own issues but just common known maintenance items for a v12. Long story short you shouldnt have to worry about a facelifted w221 as you would the 7 series. Now if you want piece and mind get a good warranty to offset big repairs. The 7g tronic is pretty solid transmission. Has had many hiccups in the past. Regular servicing definitely helps. Air struts are common on any air suspension vehicle, buy a Benz and be happy. Gooduck

I have the 2010 that just hit 80,000 miles. I have had it for just under 23 months. Mine was a one owner car, serviced by MB by the previous owner and still by me as well. II have a bumper to bumper 4-year 36,000-mile warranty on it that I have had to use several times. The total cost of my Covered cost for warranty repairs has been about $4800. My out of pocket on those repairs was about $300. The most expensive repair that was covered was $2300 for the tilt steering wheel motor. I have had both wheel axle and ball joints replaced that was about $1100. EGR valve and Valve cover gasket replaced was $350. The rear center brake lamp was $500 to replace. There were one or two other things that I can't recall what they were.

I have to bring it in for service when I get a chance. I need the charcoal filter on the filler neck replaced (I think) and my lower driver side heated seat does not work. All will be covered.

My car is an example of a car that was perfectly maintained by its previous owner and still is by me. 2010 is a pretty model year that saw 99% of the bugs worked out of the w221. But, like any high-end car, the possibility remains that it can nickel and cine you to death, My advice would be shoot for a 2012- or 2013 that you can still warranty. There are warranty companies that will cover the 2010 but it will be expensive and may not be worth it because it will not cover what you need it to cover.

I just bought myself a 2004 BMW 645 convertible that replaces my former 2002 3 Series Convertible. I was curious if a company would warranty it. Surprisingly I found a company that would warranty a 14-year-old car with 127,000 miles on it. They wanted almost $7000 for a 2-year warranty and the coverage was pretty basic. I didn't buy it because the car came with a 1-year 12,000-mile warranty. Check them out it may help you make a decision.

The prices you gave me are MB dealer prices correct?

Yes, Ray Catena in Edison NJ. services my Mercedes. I should also add that my Mercedes had 64,000 miles on it when I bought it.

Those are the portion of what he paid after the warranty paid for the repair...my 2010 also had the steering wheels motor replaced, the driver seat bottom and the 3rd brake light.

Not knowing your driving conditions but for comparison, I have a 2012 S550 with just over 100k miles. Replaced front struts, ball joints, A arms, motor and transmission mounts. Each one time only. Normal wear and tear. Motor, trans and 4matic all good. Car runs like a supersonic brick on glass. I would buy its low mileage twin if I could find one. Warranty - check with your local credit unions - they have already vetted the trash policies.

My out of pocket was $300. The warranty company picked up the rest. It's solid coverage.

What happened to your driver seat bottom? Did they replace the heated seat element or the entire cushion?

Might state the asking price for some perspective, but from the Carfax, I would avoid any 8 year old car that spent all it's life in the heart of the rust belt. With that said, I'm selling an '11 S600 that has been fully serviced.

Yes the entire bottom...didnt match 100% initially after a few months was perfect. The seat back was a bit more shiney due to useage.

I'd care more about service history than miles (to a point). Give me the one driven 12k/yr with complete VMI report FULL of maintenance over the garage queen that is 4 years over due on an ABC flush. These are not exotic hyper cars, they were made to be driven. And if driven and maintained correct, the mileage almost doesn't matter
