Driver seat wear
My 2010 S-550 driver seat bottom is starting to show some wear
Driver seat back rest is OK.
Local dealer wants around $800 (after discount) for the leather replacement
driver seat cover.
Considering having a shop that does upholstery do the replacement,
which should be cheaper?
My concern is if there are any electronics, fans etc.that could be
adversely affected if an upholstery shop replaces the seat bottom?
Anyone have any experience on this type issue?
(Note: By mistake initially posted on the S-Class (W 222) )

This is NOT a job for an upholstery shop that is inexperienced in working with S class seats. Depending on the version of seat in your vehicle, it could include heating, cooling, and possibly air bladders that adjust the seat. Based on the potential complexity, I would stick with a dealer who will be able guarantee that the job is done correctly. You may have little recourse if an independent upholstery shop messes things up.
Prior to the start of work, I would verify that all seat functions are working properly and demonstrate this to whoever will do the job. After the job is complete, verify all seat functions are still operating correctly before you leave the facility (ideally prior to paying). If something is not working, it could be as simple as forgetting to connect something.

I work in car customization, I do not know of a single upholstery shop in this area (DMV) that couldn't change this cover. If you check reviews and find a decent shop just talk to them. Folks like to make these vehicles out to be unworkable machines and that is simply not true. Use common sense, find a decent shop you think can do it and have at it. Otherwise, your only other real option is the dealer.

My seat has all of the functions you mentioned...cooling, heating, bladders, etc.So even though the dealer may
cost more, getting it fixed properly is worth it. Also checking all function work properly is a good point I over looked,
Thank you,
