2013 S550 4matic
2013 W221 Transmission Service
This forum has been a very valuable and educational resource for me. And while this is my first post since acquiring our 2013 W221 4matic back in early 2015, I've been able to learn a lot and avoid some potential ownership pitfalls from this group. To that end, I want to thank those experts that provide their wisdom and experiences.
I acquired my W221 certified from a MB dealer in early 2015. And while I recognize the technological advancements that the W222 offered, I just could not "cozy up" to the new design. I liked the look and feel that the W221 offered over the W222. Still do, and haven't regretted my purchase. My S550 4matic is now 5 years old, has 29,800 miles on the odometer. It is due a C service. The vehicle has operated flawlessly with only a few minor maintenance items and compliance with the tensioner bulletin (thanks to Konigstiger).
Average annual mileage on the vehicle is 6,000 miles. I have followed the maintenance schedule (I thought) rigorously since I'd like to keep this car in my family for many years to come.
My question to the group today is regarding the Transmission Service. My local dealer here in Boise is telling me that the 278 engine is past due its transmission service, which is required at 4 years or 40,000 miles. Based on the MB Service Sheet AP00.20-U-120811 for the model year 2013, I am reading that the transmission service is due at 7 years or 70,000 miles. I'm hopeful that this group can help me confirm the correct schedule and recommend the timing of the transmission service.
Many Thanks...
Eric

Thank you for your help and information.
I'm wondering if the Mercedes Service Rep has a "generic" service due list that she is using that shows the 4 year/40,000 mile transmission service?
Like my Porsche 928 ownership experience, I think it's very helpful to be a very informed consumer as a vehicle ages.
To those who are celebrating Thanksgiving in the States...hope you enjoy the celebration. For the rest of the world, you can be thankful that you don't have to wash the extra dishes!

The older versions of this transmission did indeed have a 40K mile specified fluid change interval.
This transmission was modified in 2010.
Advisor is either confused or dishonest.

I did the 80,000 mile service on my 2010 last year, at 74,000 miles. According to the service interval checklist in the owners manual, it is still at 40,000 miles for the 2010.

When in doubt, changing an oil sooner rather than later would be better. I've never heard of any lubrication issues due to an oil being changed too often.

MY07-11 722.9 transmission 40,000/4, MY12-13 722.9 NAT2FE+ 70,000/7 due to the reduction of friction power and thus heat input into the FE+ converter extended oil change interval applies.

What fluid is everyone using for 07-11? Are most of you going to the dealer for this? A friend of mine just got a 2010 and is asking same question.

the safest thing is to use Merc's own - whilst MANY make oils they are not always identical and on transmissions they are strange beasts
there a bit in this post on the 7Gs the 9G uses another oil again

I believe what you are looking for is option code A89. A89 = blue lower viscosity fluid and longer change interval. It also uses a different pan and filter. I would assume some 2011s have A89. Possibly some 2010s??

I'm going to use Shell 134. It is one of approved fluids. I've got two cases sitting in my garage ready to go, but my car has been at the dealer for other issues for a couple weeks.

Might I suggest visual inspection of oil pan to confirm? Left up to production 6/18/10 = ATF134 (236.14).

Just wanted to update here. I'm working with a Mercedes dealer with a great reputation, that is doing the flush on the car. They are reasonable and the shop foreman is doing it so I know it's in good hands. If anyone is near Lancaster Mercedes, they are awesome.
