Heated drivers seat issue

Seat back heats but seat bottom does not.

Thoughts?

It's broken. Common issue. Mine needs to be repaired as well when I go in for service. The dealer will replace the entire seat bottom cushion.

Same issue with mine.
But as I live in CA, having the back side warm up seems to be sufficient, as it does not get very cold.

Never place a knee on a heated seat cushion.
It can break some of the wires, then the resistance measurement is a little different and it won't work anymore.

Guess this would be another reason to just leave it alone and not worry about it.

Same issue here, mine went out the beginning of this month. I used to use mine daily so it's kind of a bummer, but oh well. At least the vented seats still work! I was thinking about getting a used cushion off eBay and installing it, but it would probably have the same issue and there's no way to check until it's installed. Oddly since going out, it has worked once or twice when turning it on out of the maybe 20 times I've used it to still heat up the backrest.

You'd be able to tell on the used one. The connector gets bent and breaks from sitting on it. Lol, doesn't make sense, they know you sit on a seat.

FYI heating element is incorporated into seat cushion unless damage is blatant doubt upholsterer will be able to perform repair. See attached images first is MY07, next MY12. If steadfast in checking see attachments for DYI.

This is very strange that built-in massage function in the car seat fails because you don't actually use it that often and it must be more practical and durable. But not break in a few months. To tell the truth, I always admired such systems and I have read many car seat massager reviews before ordering my own. And frankly speaking, there are many special seat cushions with a massage function that fixes over your car seat for a very affordable price. Indeed, it is very easy to install it and there is no such complex connection system for repairing which you need to disassemble the halth of the car just some adapters for car/office/plug.

I use aftermarket massage pads in my work trucks. Being on the road all day, jumping in and out takes a toll on the body. I buy units that have heat, cooling fans, and massage. Usually the massage is just a vibration. I don't like them to thick or they aren't comfortable. Putting something like this in my Freightliner, or Ford E350 is one thing. Putting one in my Mercedes, BMW, or Corvette is blasphemy. I'll pay the money to fix it or add them.

I repaired mine today, reference the element/seat cover photo, the break was in the top right corner as you view the photo, which equates to the round down part that would end up under the inside of ones left knee.

After about an hour of futzing pulling the seat and breaking it down to get to removing the cover, the soldering bit took less than a minute, actually took longer to heat the iron than to do the work! Checked my repair, the element ohmed out at 3.3 or so, good to go, i put a square of duct tape over the wound to protect it. Definitely a longer slog reassembling, given mines gray, there was cleaning to do as well.

Not sure i understand all I know about the airbags, I did NOT have the key on at all when the leads were disconnected and I still got 3 faults i had to clear with DAS. GRRR. Should have popped the negative batt lead, guessing that would have help me skip the reset bit! Kind of a futzy job, time consuming, but not too difficult. A little bit of auto-upholstery knowledge is helpful, one needs to remove the copper stays that hold the cover seams in the cushion, remove the long side ones first then the middle, reverse for install the short inner ones first then the long sides.

Good comment about kneeling on heated seats, i can see the way this element is woven into the cover, it would be easy to “knee” through and break the stranded copper element.

Point of repair

I have a ‘workaround’ for these .. has been done on my W220 years ago and more recently on my W221. Each repair lasted 5+ years till I sold the car.

Buy a heated seat kit on eBay or Amazon. Has a bottom and a back element plus a switch. Designed to add heated seats to a regular everyday car with non-heated seats.

Remove lower seat covering at the front (no need to completely disconnect or remove it.. just pull it up to get underneath it).

Slide new heated seat element in to place and put seat cover back on. Find two pin connector (12V) on the existing seat cover element. Cut it off and wire it to the new element.

Works like factory with existing seat heater button and everything. Sure it’s not as hot (because it has to heat through not only the leather but also the old seat element that is still in place). But it’s barely noticeable how different it is, and you have heated seats again.

Don’t remember what I paid but it was under $50.

this thread popping back to life got me searching seat covers on ebay USA - there are shed loads of secondhand ones available (how come?)

if I can buy an almost unused USA front passenger cover it ought to have had little use - whilst I found about 10 of the right part all looked far more battered than I wanted and postage and duties is mad

I have a set of heater elements, I could easily add one to the driver front squab - but I thought the leather and foam sponge were bonded together on the 2007 or earlier part? @bha1 are you saying its beneath the whole foam pad on yours now?
