Keep your car key at night far away from the outer walls

Here is the reason. If the key is close enough to a wall, outside of which a thieve can sense it, the thieve can use a range extender to transfer the signal from the key to you car, open the door and drive away. Nice and clean.

Just put your key in a metal box.

Yep started doing that a while ago when the whole proxy/remote key readers started coming out. Make sure you test the key and check that it doesn't get read from the box. Don't assume the box would automatically work.

I forget to mention that point.

If you have a mBrace subscription you do have vehicle location and remote locking.

The best thing to do, is to design the keyfob to open and close. So you can remove the small battery when you leave the car somewhere. Just insert the battery when you’re close to the car.

The metal box may work but the battery removal will turn the signal off and you don’t have to worry about the signal extender.

Key fobs could have an on/off switch. That would seem to be the most logical thing to do.

The later Mercedes models feature a way to disable Keyless-Go functions by pressing the Lock button on the remote two times in quick succession for this specific reason.

Does the vehicle detect the lack of a key at all once the thieves drive away? Is there any action taken?

Yes - it periodically checks the existence of a key present. There are certain conditions that can trigger the detection of a key as well such as coming to a stop and opening and closing a door without turning the vehicle off.

It will flash a warning on the cluster informing you that the key is no longer detecting in the car (in case you dropped off the person when that was carrying the fob and drove away unknowingly without it). The W221 will not take any action other than beep with the warning on the dash. It will not turn the engine off.
