Parking brake cable - where does this clip go?

I'm replacing the parking brake actuator on my 2010 S550. When I took the parking brake shoes apart and removed the old cables from the backing plate, this clip fell out on each side and I can't determine where it goes to put it all back together.

Anyone know what this clip is for or where it goes?

Have a copy of the repair manual, and there is no mention of this clip anywhere that I can find in the brake shoe R/R procedure AR42.20-P-0530SX, brake controller procedure AR42.20-P-0590SX, or R/R rear brake cable at wheel carrier AR42.20-P-0525-03SX.

I am doing the same job now putting the parking brake back together after installing the new wheel bearing. I have the same clip and can not figure out were it goes in the assembly. Did you ever figure this out??
Thanks,
Paul

Good morning,

My name is Harry from the Netherlands. I drive a mercedes w221 and have the same problem as the other guys. This clip. Can somebody please give some more detailed information. What is the function. Is it just for installation? And what is the correct way to install in the expansion lock. Hopefullly somebody can help me.

Best regards

I did this job a few months back. The clip goes in next to the spring rod and the clip even has a space for the rod to go through. The other side just pushes against the expander holding it in place. It took me awhile to figure it out and the pics helped.
Hold the spring and put the clip on the rod and you will get the idea.
Now putting all the hardware back together is another story... not fun.
There is a good video online that shows this process.

I like how modern cars still use drum in hat parking brakes to give the youngins a taste of what it used to be like with these Rube Goldberg braking devices. Actually I'd rather have drum in hat than a caliper actuated parking brake where piston retraction can often be troublesome and drives up the cost of calipers (and the complexity of rebuilding them). Lesser of two evils....

Nissan B14 comes to mind. Frozen parking brake cables and frozen rear caliper with parking brake actuator not able to move

I just came across this. So that clip is actually very simple. Here's a quick rundown of the whole procedure.
1 install shoes both upper and lower with hold down springs
2 install long double spring by inserting one end into bottom shoe. Then with a screwdriver, lift the upper side of spring into upper shoe
3 install star adjuster side spring
4 lubricate star adjuster threads. Turn in all the way. Lift upper shoe with a screwdriver and insert star adjuster with star wheel facing up
5 turn hub so that you can see the long middle of the double spring on actuator side through one of the hubs larger holes. With a needle nose and a flat screwdriver, push this expansion lock clip in until it locks against the flat of the spring
