When it comes to staggered wheels and a full size spare, I guess it's the luck of the draw which one goes flat.

Pretty much guaranteed to be the one you DON'T have. One good reason to use the steel donut spare, I guess.

Hmmm, I would think that using a 255 spare tire on the rear (instead of the 275 which is on the rear) is way much safer than the donut wheeel.
Or are you concerned that due to the offset the front wheel won't fit on the rear?
This should be no problem: the front is 8.5" wide and the rear is 9.5" wide.
Both rims have a 43 mm offset
That would mean that a front wheel mounted on the rear has 1/2" more inner clearance and sticks out 1/2" less from the wheel arch, so it won't look too great but should be much safer than the donut wheel.

The donut should be perfectly fine as long as it's in good condition, properly inflated, and not driven at high speeds.

The same could be said for running the narrower front wheel & tire on the *** end of an S600... should be fine as long as the tire is in good condition, inflated properly, and not driven at high speeds because now you've got an oddball combination of tire and wheel sizes with not entirely predictable handling characteristics. Not AS bad as the donut, but one would still be wise to limit one's speed somewhat.

So, personally I'm not seeing the advantage. You wouldn't need to carry extra studs, though I don't know if the spare tire cover in the trunk (the trunk floor) will still fir properly. Haven't tried that. And for whatever reason, I don't recall ever seeing a donut spare that needed air in it. I can't say the same for full sized spares. My truck has a full sized spare slung underneath, and I have to check it a couple times a year and fill it from time to time. The donut in the S600 hasn't needed air in the two years I've owned it. Not a huge deal, just a little additional check during the maintenance cycle.

But, to each their own. Different people have different priorities, so go with whatever makes you happy. The blown front on my car was the first tire I've had to change on the side of the road in the past 8 or 10 years, so it's not a big priority for me -- now that I have the proper studs to mount the silly thing, of course.

I kid you not: I have the car now for close to 4 years and I had 3 or 4 front tires that went flat (the worst incident was when once some a**hole came speeding out of a sidestreet at night, didn't see me and I had to take evasive action up the center divider, the rim survived, the tire didn't, the guy took off).
That's why I am considering replacing the donut with a full sized (255) spare. I am 100% sure that as soon as I have a full sized spare I won't be needing it anymore though :-)

Try the part number with no spaces. It's annoying, some places uses no spaces... some use spaces... some use dashes... and none seem to normalize what you enter to match their preferred format, which would be easy enough to do.

Genuine OEM Spare Part Box Part# 220-580-00-10 Fits MB Parts Source (mbpartsource.com)

The strangest thing is I can drive thousands of miles from MD to FL and everywhere else and back with no tire issues but yet when I am within a mile or two of my house, it's the only time I have had a flat tire.

I can't speak to your side of the country, but around my neck of the woods... highways typically don't have monster tire-eating potholes. Local surface roads do, in abundance. So if you can dodge them on your way to and from the on-ramp, then you're golden.

Indeed once you get aftermarket wheels, almost never will the lug bolts work with the spare in the car. If one cares to, one must make sure before you get a flat that you have lug bolts that will work. I don't bother because I have AAA and would just go to the nearest tire shop and get a new tire. Naturally, they probably wouldn't have one on hand and would have to order one, and of course the wait for Triple A would be hours. Usually when I ever called Triple A and made cure they know I needed a TOW they invariably send a fool with a battery checking tool, who wastes a long time to arrive then wastes more time playing with the battery, then orders the tow I told them hours ago I'd needed. I've quit Triple before due to this kind of service. But, re-joined just because I want to be able to get a tow when needed.

It's only during the winter, which I typically don't drive it that much anyway but the highways can get rough from the weather, not to mention it's always new construction taking place somewhere along I-95.

I ordered a set of those spare lugs Dale wrote about today. As you all know, I have suffered three front tire blow outs from pot holes. I wrote about them in another thread. Michelin PS3s. I decided, the real problem is insufficient air pressure combined with the low low profile. I don't want to lose the nice ride nor the handling in turns which is fabulous for a big heavy car, so I am keeping the low profile staggered 19s. But I am pumping each tire up to 39 pounds cold which means they run about 42 pounds of pressure at road speeds. I think the extra 10 pounds of air will provide a better cushion when I decide to explore the pot hole canyons again. I will keep you posted.

Would I be correct to assume the trunk floor tray with the hinged lids and storage bins will no longer fit?

Yes, I had to take out the storage tray below the hinged lids. But you can do that w/o breaking anything, it's totally reversible.
And if you put some weigh in the trunk, the lids are now supported by the spare tire

Follow up to this story:
BEST investment I ever made. While on a road trip my rear tire caught a nail. I wasn't able to find a tire shop that could fix it (very long story).
So I put my new "full size" (front wheel) spare on the back and drove home w/o any issues (even though the rears were now slightly mismatched)
My local tire shop then patched the tire for $20
Thanks again for the tip!

It's a pristine new rim with a brand new Michelin AS/3 tire (both front wheel fitment)

FYI …

… note that for the “donut” spare wheel, on Mercedes, the air valve for this wheel is an off standard part that you won’t be able to find anywhere except from a Mercedes dealer. I carry a spare.
