Ship it, haul it, or drive it....?

I'm 400 miles from the dealership I bought the car, and I'm really not a fan of putting it on a heavy-traffic-always-in-construction Hwy 10 for 400 miles on its 1st day.

Should I ship it, haul it, or drive it? If I ship, I'd have to wait more days after I bought it to get it. I've never heard of anyone hauling their new car home themselves on the back of a trailer, but the idea crossed my mind. Or do I just drive it......

I would drive it. Take back roads and get to know the car.

400 miles? really?

drive it man. If it can't handle a few rough roads when its brand new, its a problem. In fact, it will be a good shake down for squeeks/rattles, problems, etc.

it's a mercedes & an S-Class to boot. I think 400 miles is not a strain. You know you could drive it cross country without any issues

Ok thanks for the input. Guess I'm so excited about this one, that I don't want to be too hard on her on the first day. Lol.

And those dreaded rock chips from the road.....ugh.

yeah, maybe run through the gears a bit so you aren't staying at a single rpm for the whole trip.

some backroads would be great if you can find them.

if you are really concerned about rock chips, you can have them leave the shipping covers on the car or cover the front end with some blue painters tape.

Wow, wouldn't have thought of that. Forgot all about those shipping covers.

I see your point , stone chips on a brand spanking new car is not something I would want either
May be you can wrap or have your dealer wrap a clear 3M protective film or tint from front bumper cover to all the way hood . You can remove it later once the roads are all clear
One of my ex cars delivered at my home with a trailer , it was so exiting for that car to arrive me
I must say , picking up the car off the dealer and driving it home or anywhere you like is the best and the most enjoyable trip namely if it is a car you long for so badly

The funny thing is, it's probably not this trip that the stone chip is going to come... Mark my words, you will get it home and it will be pristine... A couple of days from now, that dump truck who's in a hurry is going to pull out in front of you and toss a nice big rock into the hood...

Don't trying to jinx you or anything...

Quit worrying about it and drive the damn thing already!

I cannot remember where I read it but MB does have information on the 1000 mile break-in. It is more basic things like don't red line it. I'm picking up mine in Stuttgart and driving it through Austria and all around Italy for two weeks. I suspect if MB was concerned about people driving their cars after pickup, European delivery would not be much of a thing. Plenty of Europeans pick up their cars in Stuttgart and drive them home. Get out there and enjoy it.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it, the most liberating day is when you get the first rock chip or ding. That's why I have a good detailer

112 days and counting.

It's not an art object, it's a car.
Enjoy driving it and don't drive too timid

They are big, beautiful cars with big engines and no speed in the US will put any stress on it.

Drive it! So you can know all the problem on the car. lol. My drive side heater seat fail to work. Press the bottom then light went off. (1 day later works now) Now my windshield washer fluid is leaking on my garage, no big deal. The Steering Assist / Distronic Plus / and one more Malfunction during driving, after re-start the car, it works now. Right rear TV does not able to tilt up and down like the rear left, asked dealer and maybe it is the way they build the car in case they have the executive package. And Bluetooth can not re-connect to different device if disconnect the old device.... Hope that's it for now.
