Consumption Charge Max dashboard status

If I bring up the Trip status on the dash and scroll to the Consumption screen that shows current mpg, it also shows a gauge called Charge, with max to the far right. Anyone know what Charge is showing? It seems to peak when I am coming to a stop.

Could be regenerative braking, but I haven't seen anything in the specs to indicate it is available in the gas powered S550. Someone must have figured this out!

I believe it is for the plug in hybrid models to monitor battery charge status.

I have a non-hybrid S550 and I have it in my in-dash monitor. As others have noted, the charge 'meter' goes to max when slowing down but is at zero at all other times. I too have wondered about it and don't really know what it means or represents.

Do you have the "Charge Max" indicator only when the fuel consumption menu is set to use litres per 100 km instead of miles per gallon?

It must be regenerative braking but only using the alternator for that purpose as it does not have the hybrid electric drive. This is what BMW has been doing for quite some time.

The car can also reduce alternator output to increase the available engine power temporarily. A minor effect either way, of the order of 1 to 3 kW.

Interesting, I had a look at the pdf manual from MBUSA and did not see that charge indicator. Perhaps I just missed it.

The Alternator is only activated when needed to save some horsepower. When slowing the vehicle it kicks in and helps load the engine at that time. It also kicks in during driving if the battery charge gets low.. No connection to brakes..This is my uneducated guess on the function.

Did you mean deactivated?

Activated and deactivated does not necessarily mean 100% on/off but the above (complete message) should be right.

It is still "regenerative braking" or recuperative braking even if it was not connected to brakes by any means (any kinetic energy transformed to battery charge would equal to braking the car).

The charge meter always lights up green completely when I'm using the weight of the car to roll down a hill or braking to a stop. I always thought it charged the battery for the auto stop-start feature.
