Spark Plug Change

Once or twice when I was younger, I was that guy who was broken down on the side of the road due to a basic maintenance issue that I let go too long. So now I tend to stay on top or ahead of these things. With my 2016 W222, I was doing a normal oil and air filter change around 46K miles, so I decided to change the spark plugs, ignition wires, and coils as well since I was so close to 50K miles. The plugs, wires, and coils all looked fine, but changing them also gave me peace of mind. I would much rather service the ignition system on my own timetable as opposed to being forced to do so as the result of a Check Engine light.

Not too bad of a video

Detach air flow pipes at the marked spots. Unscrew the screws on the air filter housing both sides. Pull the two tops off and lay them in the center with the cables attached - easier than trying to detach the cable. There is one additional bolt on each side where the plastic attaches to the aluminum air inlets to the engine. Yank the plastic up and off and you’ll see the engine underneath.
Undo the 2 bolts but don’t disconnect the cable as it’s a pain. When you pull the boot off the plug just set it aside gently.
I blocked the engine air inlet with a rag so nothing falls into it.
Use a pick to pull the boot off the plug otherwise you may break the boot. The pick fits in the hook shown. When reinstalling push down on the hook.
Here’s the boot lying there whilst I change the plugs.
Put dielectric grease inside the boot before pushing it onto the plug. Use a lot. This all took me about 2 hours as I was extra careful not to be too rough.
