Lane keep assist

Can someone answer how lane keep assist operates? Does it apply brakes to either the left or right side of the vehicle to center in the lane or does it actually steer the vehicle?

Lane keep assist does control the steering but up to a certain angle only. If you accidentally departs your lane and the system detects the departure from the lane then instead of aggressively steering the car back it applies a brake to the left or right wheels to force the car to go back to the other direction without causing oversteering or loosing control

Lane keep will vibrate the steering wheel as well if you approach or cross lane markers without signaling.

Only when you have Distronic engaged will it actually steer for you. And if you’re in traffic under 20 mph- you get unlimited hands free steering. Once you go above 20 mph, it’ll remind you to get your hands back on the wheel every 15 seconds or so.

MB website for: Active Lane Keeping Assist
With technology that monitors ordinary road markings above a certain driving speed, Active Lane Keeping Assist helps detect unintended drifting off-course, and alerts you by vibrating the steering wheel. If you continue to drift, it can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back into its lane. Enhancements help it to detect and alert you to overtaking vehicles, vehicles you would need to overtake if you change lanes, and even oncoming traffic in the adjacent lane.

Available in Driver Assistance Package

Distronic with steering assist is differnent and does use steering... but only when distronic is on.

LKA is the one option I have turned off. In my area with so much road construction and poor lane striping it initiates constantly and is more annoying than helpful.

Right. I only used these features to try them when I bought my car last year but would never use them again, rely on them or trust them ... ever. I've heard too many stories and find using any of these features totally scary. I know most others would disagree with me but I know what I'm personally comfortable with, and it's not to trust my car to steer, slow down, know where I am in a lane, etc.

YGMN is right on and I may add that when not using Distronic plus the warning I get is not a steering wheel vibration but a severe braking instead ( very un-nerving) on the side where the lane markings are. When using Distronic plus I get a gentle nudge in the steering wheel in the opposite direction to the lane crossing.....for those that prefer "driving their vehicle with both hands on the wheel" then this nudging is reassuring. Some complain that the system if left on its own without your input, will act like a ping pong video game, but when using the system together with your driving input, we get a safer result.

It is just annoying, especially to someone driving <essentially> perfectly.

Say you have a double apex turn where a single turn of the steering wheel takes you from outside track, to first apex, to second outside, to second apex to track out all with a single turn of the steering wheel. LKA will make you make at least 3 steering inputs and buzz the steering wheel twice more.

Very annoying feature. The auto braking jerking you back into your lane is scary.
