S560 Winter Tire recommendations?
Hi all,
Currently running 20" wheels/tire setup. My plan is to swap current summer tires for winter tires. Winter tire recommendations are appreciated!
Also, to confirm my understanding, any tire is acceptable as long as I maintain the current size and XL weight rating?

You have the wrong size of the rear tires and may have an issue with 4Matic system in the future. Correct size is 285/35/20

Not true. I have an 2019 S63 AMG and the tires were purchased for me by the dealership where I bought the car and I checked with Mercedes USA before I bought them. I’ve used them now for three winters swapped out in summers with the original tires. I’ve had no issues. Thanks for your reply notwithstanding.

Not true. I have an 2019 S63 AMG and the tires were purchased for me by the dealership where I bought the car and I checked with Mercedes USA before I bought them. I’ve used them now for three winters swapped out in summers with the original tires. I’ve had no issues. Thanks for your reply notwithstanding.

AEG is correct on this one. The winter tires you are running have a difference in rolling diameter of 3.6%. Not saying it is a problem but could cause premature wear on the transfer case built into the transmission. That is why the Merc spec for 4Matic equipped cars is below 3% in rolling diameter difference. I would take it back to the dealer and insist that they put the correct size of rears on. They may have done this because the 285/35/20 is not available as a snow tire but who knows. Dealer should have known better.

Thanks for all your feedback. When I bought the vehicle I specifically checked with MBUSA which said unequivocally “yes” the tires were fine to use as winter tires, which is why I went ahead and bought them. Given the feedback here from you all I will check again tomorrow both with dealer and MBUSA itself. I’ll let you all know what the response is. Thanks again for the helpful feedback. So far have not had any issues whatsoever but given what I paid for the vehicle surely not taking any chances. This is a subject for a different thread but one constant issue I have faced is steering column has regularly stuck in terms of up and down driver adjustment (telescoping works fine). I had to have the entire steering column replaced but notwithstanding the up and down adjustment still sticks until I several times manually move the knob up and down after the car has run a bit. Has been a very annoying defect.

Yes I've visited a couple of different tire size websites to see what is to be found there and two of those sites seem to indicate that my 285/40/20 is not an issue as far as they're concerned. I will however check tomorrow again with both the dealership and with MBUSA.

I have checked the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls as well as MBUSA and I don't seem to have any issues. Be glad you've not had to deal with the steering column problems -- they are a headache in that you've paid for certain features in the price of the vehicle (e.g. "Easy Entry/Exit" but it won't work if the column steering wheel mechanism is stuck.

After going back to the original dealership in North Carolina where I purchased the vehicle and from whom I ordered the winter tires they have now indeed changed their minds and agreed that they mounted the wrong rear winter tires three years ago in terms of size and KNEW it. I am pretty incensed that they would do this -- as they asserted at the time I bought the car that the slight change in tire size was not an issue at all and now have retracted that statement. I have yet to hear directly again from MBUSA after having also directly once again consulted them -- but thanks again for alerting me that I may have a problem. I have now ordered a set of OEM sized winter tires (Michelin) and will have them mounted within a week. I deeply appreciate those of you on this thread that chimed in to let me know I might be having a problem and could be over time severely damaging the vehicle.
