Audis absolutely have Google Earth maps

Not anymore. They use Maxar now, because Google sunset the API Audi was using. Most older Audis (<2020) lost satellite view as a result. Newer hardware was required with a Qualcomm SOC. Those that already had the newer hardware were eligible for a software update, all others were out of luck. The maps themselves are from HERE, just like the MB maps and the satellite images come from Maxar, which aggregates them from multiple sources as far as I know.

I wish I could just tap on a city and not have to worry about an address or street.
I wish I couple use the wheel more like a mouse.
In Android's Google Maps, you can choose a location and share it with the Mercedes Me app. The app will then send the location to the car, ask you if you want to navigate to it, and store it in the previously visited places.

Yes they do and the provider is Maxar as I said. It's eye candy not much more. I had an Audi before and I actually prefer the way MB does it. The issue with the satellite maps in Audis and Google Maps is that you don't see the POIs on the map anymore and it's rather cluttered with the satellite view, so as you zoom in with the MB system it switches to POI view and shows things like how occupied parking structures are in real time where supported. Also used to show fuel prices next to gas stations, but that service was turned of recently.

In the newest models, MB has essentially upstaged it with the augmented reality navigation, which as opposed to simple eye candy, is actually functional.

I like the eye candy, personally. Nothing wrong with eye candy. My Google maps shows POIs.

I live in Seattl, most fantastic cell reception. BUT, I need maps when I'm not in Seattle, like in Central Washington and especially in Montana. We have a couple properties off the cell grid in Montana, and that's where/when I NEED maps. It's not a luxury, but a necessity in those situations. I only get to visit once or twice a year at the most, so I still get lost without maps. 99% of the time it's a convenience.

Whatever did we do before we had GPS? You can download the maps into Google Maps for areas you're going to be traveling in.

I get it, but the industry is definitely moving away from built in native GPS
