Why is 'Diamond White' paint an extra-cost option?

Why is 'Diamond White' paint an extra-cost option?
Do other manufacturers charge extra for white cars? Seems a little odd, anyone know why Mercedes does this?

It didn't used to be, it became a designio color maybe in 2017 or so .. silly

Is it because it has the word diamond or because it is metallic?

Even with Lincoln and Ford you can get a basic white for no cost or their white platinum or similar for a slight uncharge, metallic and Tri-coat or something. We've had a few Lincolns and it does look nicer than basic white.

Diamond White is a tricoat. Very common for manufacturers to charge extra for tricoat paints. So there is a color coat, a pearl coat and then a clearcoat. The other colors are dual stage, so just color and clear.
