2021 vs waiting for 2022 S Class

I am in a quandary. My 2021 S580 is no where in sight. It has been built but not shipped. If the rumors are true, they may not be released until June 1. My current 2018 lease has expired and I can keep driving it as long as I have a car on order. It just doesn't seem wise to pay MSRP for a 2021 when the 2022 could be released in just a few months. I couldn't order the 3D display because it hadn't been released when I ordered the car. I'm sure others have gone through this thought process. Any advice? Has anyone heard the possible order date for the 2022 S? I assume that if I don't accept the car, I will have to give up my 2018 lease and rent a car until the 2022s come in.

Thanks for all the input. I just answered my own question. I was just told that the 2021 S class would not be released until an unknown date "this summer." I'm ordering a 2022.

I’m going for 2022 too. There are 3 new colors and E-Active body control that they are introducing in 2022.

Plus getting a 2021 in the middle of the year doesn’t make sense.

I just got back from the dealer. My sales person said there are 2021's in the pipeline, but they are being held as you say, but she is thinking they may be released in May although she also said the rumor is June. She also said practically all the units in the computer had names (sold) with them.

I want a 500 rather then a 580 and there was no option on the dealers system to build a 2021 500, but there was for the 2022. She built a 2022 S500 similar to Stephane's build that she posted on a previous thread, minus the 4D Burmester stereo, E-Active Body Control, Night Package, chose Cirrus Silver paint a different trim (that I can't recall, but was brown wood w/metal).

Like Stephane's, my build sheet shows no prices and I was not able to place the order or get an idea how much the car will cost. The dealer expects to get a car in on the 15'th for sales training. She said I should come out and look at it and hopefully the cars will be available to order soon.

hi there,
so she definitely can see the pricing on 2021 builds; may be you can ask her to give you the pricing on existing sold builds which are similar to yours.

I can build the 2021's on Carsdirect and get a pretty good idea on price.
https://www.carsdirect.com/build/sty...&zipcode=89102 (click on a model and use the Configure tab) (some of the model pictures are wrong, go by text)
and Rockville, NY Mercedes has a lot of incoming 2021's and you can see most of the build sheets and prices, but my dealer said she can not yet order a S500 (2021 or 2022), and the 2022's are not priced in her system to order either.

I have a 2021 S580 on order. It was built and waiting a ship for transport to the US. I have all the pricing for my 2021. The dealer read me a letter from MB that just came out that stated that the 2021s would not be released until this summer. It didn't give a reason or a date, it just said "this summer." The letter apologized for the delay. My dealer was able to place my 2022 S580 order into their system and said that when they got their allotment, he would place my order. There were no prices for the 2022. I'm not sure what is causing the delays. There is something out of the ordinary going on since many 2021 S have been built and many of the 2021s are already sitting in the holding lots in the US. I just figured that if I am going to have to pay MSRP for a 2021 and it will be summer before I get it, why not wait for the 2022s to come out. The delay could be regulatory or it could be an issue with the parts. I know from reading an article on the web that 1400 of the 2021 S class cars were recalled for a tie rod issue. Those cars were elsewhere in the world, not in the US. MB is certainly not helping their reputation with their higher end buyers with the way that the 2021s are being handled.

My dealer also said the first cars are at the VPC and won't be released until June. Is the E-active suspension that important or worth waiting for?

Wonder about the chips we keep reading about. Makes sense they'd start building 21's and store them while waiting for the remaining chips to become available ...

I wonder if lots of people will cancel their 21 orders since the 22s are right around the corner. Then I'll scoop up an unsold discounted 21 lol.

I thought about taking the 2021 this summer when they are released, but then I was told that they will still be selling at MSRP in my area. The dealers in my area think that the demand will still allow them to sell at MSRP. All this is very strange. The 2022 ordering guides are out and dealers are taking reservations for the 2022s, and who knows when the 2021s will be released this summer.

That no negotiating talk might change if the 21s don't sell as fast as they thought. There are still 52 new 2020s for sale in a 100 mile radius from me. For them to have 3 model years on the lot and not wanna move them is kinda stupid.

My 2021 S580 is built and has been delivered to the Mercedes distribution center in Brunswick, GA. I was told by the dealer that June 1 is the release date. The dealer gave me the option of giving up my current car and ordering a 2022 model, but delivery would be end of year. They have a number of customers waiting for any cancellations of the 2021 models. At this point I will hold for June delivery.

Virtually all of our inbound 21's are custom orders. I doubt we will get any cancellations. Maybe a couple.

My dealer confirmed today that they heard from MBUSA last week that the US launch for the 2021 S Class is still June. They originally told me June 1st, but the Mercedes memo said June launch. The dealer is hoping that the 2021 S Class cars being held in Brunswick, Georgia, will all be shipped to dealers in June. My car arrived in Brunswick in early March (was ordered in September). It is the S580 with AMG trim, and includes 4.5 degree rear wheel steering, and 3D package. The dealer reported that the car was built with all of the options I specified.

Sounds great, but you'll need a big distraction so you don't think about it every minute.

I just ordered a 2022 s500. My dealer said they had a build date in the first decade of July and said to expect about a month to come to the United States. I hope it arrives as expected. We'll see.
