Dash Cam

I'm using this one. It's good quality and cheap and supports the dashcam feature correctly.

Using this one, which had the smallest footprint I could find. Works OK so far.

From what I can gather, the answer is no. It only captures images from the front of the car. You also have to turn it on each time you start the car. It also lacks certain automatic features that start the camera recording in case of an accident. I have an aftermarket cam and it works flawlessly with a cost of $99. This integrated camera sounds like it’s a very basic camera with very basic function.

Over the Air Updates
Having to start the dash cam each time is a pain. Other cars, including my Tesla, do this automatically. It seems to me that this is something that Mercedes should be able to correct with
an over the air software fix. One of the sales points of my buying the S580 was the over the air updates. That was one of the few things I liked about the Tesla.
I wonder if Mercedes “corporate people” ever look at blogs like this, and if not, is there a way to contact them as to the possibilities of getting this done?

I agree. This should be an easy fix. Actually it should have automatically turned on to start when the car goes on. I don’t have to do anything to my after market dash cam I currently have in my 18 S560. It starts recording as soon as I start up the car. However it is stuck to the windshield and would be nice to have a built in camera instead. I have the capability of OTA updates on my car as well but in the near 4 years I have owned the car I don’t think Mercedes has issued one update. I have a preorder in for an EQS580 and ordered both the dash cam and integrated toll system, but both have significant shortcomings when compared to after market cams and toll transponders.

The dashcam automatic start is intentionally disabled in the US market.
The functionality is there in the software, but for whatever reason it's disabled. Apparently only available in Denmark from what I hear.

I set my DASHCAM to continuous loop recording. Connected a 2TB mini drive. It automatically starts when car is turned on. Records in 2 minute clips ( would prefer 5)
Now - trying to install my own rear dashcam. Anyone had experience with wiring from inside the trunk to the rear window?

Yeah, there is another thread on this somewhere: Put it into continue loop and you're done; you can quickly access this by pulling down the shade and going to the cam from there.

Now if they can fix my EQS from defaulting back to no recuperation every time I start my car vs my last setting I will be overjoyed.

Correct, you can have it start automatically with endless loop function. But when it was first released this feature wasn’t available and you did have to turn it on everytime you started the car. Thankfully they fixed that.

I've been using this one.
Just like the Kingston mentioned above, it is able to flip between USB-C and USB-A. Only the build quality is better, with its full silver aluminium body, and better looking.
The Samsung Duo has better transfer speeds, I've used it myself, but it has a much bigger footprint than the other two, and is a bit less elegant to operate (you have to take apart and reattach the drive each time you switch between USB-A and C). Not to mention that the two-part nature creates the risk of you misplacing one component.

I happened to have mine in to the dealer service dept today for the 10,000 mile maintenance (aka the $400 oil change). Service advisor swears it's not possible to have the dashcam permanently on or turn on automatically at startup. Says he talked to their top tech person. Says he checked my VIN and there are no updates available. He seemed like he didn't know much about "zero layer update" and says he checked the specific code you gave me.
I don't know much about cars, but this wouldn't be the first time that the dealer has given me bad info about some technology aspect of the vehicle.

The rear Dash camera is the size of a PECAN nut. The rear window shade is about 1.5 inches from the window - that is NOT the issue.
My issue is locating a trusted resource that can work the cable from the rear to the front - without damaging anything ;-)

And I am aware of the A229 Duo too. Its rear cam is hardly a pecan size device...lol
But I admit that I am not aware of the fact that it can be installed sitting between the rear window and the rear shade.
Good to know this and will consider upgrading in due course.
BTW, after your installation, please post back about the rear cam installation/cable routing.
Thanks.
