Perhaps the same reason why most cell phones do not come with a pre-applied oleophobic coating.
Such a coating is difficult to apply flawlessly. And, the life span is probably a couple years. Imagine an MB owner seeing the coating worn off (unevenly) after a couple years, how frustrating (and probably angry) he will be. There will be tons of complains which might not be 'fixable' at the dealer level. Applying a tempered glass protector should be a much simple and easy solution, if the owner so desired.
