Went through the exact same harrowing ideal you faced, an hour with MB assistance who refused to understand that this car did not come with a spare and wanted to send out a tech to replace the wheel. I tried explaining to the lady that this car needs to be towed to the dealership for over 15 minutes.
I have again and again requested for the dealership to install the Michelin 4S sport tires but their response is they are not available till the end of the year. I am so afraid to drive this vehicle anywhere out of the city and after dark, that it just sits in the garage. Would be more than happy to file a law suit on Mercedes for such a horrible design and endangering people.
Please submit a complaint to NHTSA for the tires. Me and another gentleman have done so, hoping to trigger an investigation and a forced recall of these tires. If that doesn’t happen, I hope we can band together and file a lawsuit against MB and Pirelli. I would love to be able to compel them to turn over data from all dealers documenting catastrophic failures in these tires. I am convinced the numbers are staggering. And yet they flat out refused to accept responsibility.

Were these Pirelli on 21” wheels?
I have filed a safety complaint with NHTSA as to my tire - 3 - failures with this set up. It would be a good idea for those with the same failures to call the NHTSA Hotline and lodge a complaint. Reading on this Forum, there are many more of us with these tires blowing out. The more complaints NHTSA gets, the quicker s recall may happen.
This is a serious safety issue and these tires need to be replaced ASAP

The dealership has agreed to replace all 4 21 inch wheels with 19 inch, still fighting with them to provide me with 4 new Michelins for those, as they are trying to palm of used tires on the new wheels.

When it comes to sidewall strength, I'd put any brand over pirelli. If all you can get is continental, hankook, kumho, etc, I'd take em.

I'd take it and run unless the tires on offer are worn out; in that case I would still take it. IMO buying 21 wheels is a mistake on any car with any tire; if I could get out of that mistake for the cost of tires I'd be thrilled.

I was just fooling around on the BMW “Build” site for the new 7 series and when selecting wheels, look what they have there:

Where did you do that? When I go to the BMW 7 Build Site, they only show M Sport and M Sport Professional styling. I’d like to build a non-M new 7.

They've had that in the configurator for years. Everybody with a functional brain knows the bigger wheels are trash: Outside the pitfalls highlighted above they also reduce performance in every measurable metric. I don't know why people say yes to this; you don't drink poison just because it comes in a pretty bottle. But whatever, I'm old and laughing at idiots jumping on a fad that hurts them in every possible way helps keep me young.

I am still lamenting the loss of the 18” wheel option on the W223’s sold in the USA.

My kind of sidewalls:

That really says it all! I should have known better before I popped for the 21”. But, 580s were scarce at the start and that one was available.

When you load the configuration don't select the package or 21 inch wheels or it will convert to the m sport. The max wheel size for the non sport is 20 inch rims. Certain colors too will change to m sport.

The 21s on the 7 series comes with thicker tires, 255/40r21 front and 285/35r21 in the rear which is about half inch thicker.

So I had a bad flat with the Michelins on this S580! First time ever with Michelins in my life... I am dissapointed this car doesnt even have a damn flat or a jack... The nail was in the tread and went into the side wall rendering it un repairable. The air loss was so fast when I was pulling off the highway to work. I was able to drive 2 miles to the center at work and had to call the flat bed. This was ridiculous.. I am dumping the 21s and have a set of OEM 20s in my garage and will get some Michelin alll season and use 19 inch instead for winter wheels and tires. I also got a spare and jack for this car.

Whether you had 21s or 19s, you would have had the same result with the nail.

Purchasing a car with no spare and no runflats comes with the territory.

Yes, BUT--I am truly amazed at the number of everyday owners--let alone enthusiasts as we mostly have on this site--who just blindly accept this madness without at least writing a strongly worded letter to MBUSA to express their feelings on having no spare. We should all be giving everyone and anyone connected with MB a real EARFUL. In a huge country such as the USA, with much of it being rural or semi-rural, the idea of taking a longer road trip, out of metro areas in a vehicle not equipped with a spare is just plain NUTS! The engineering juggernaut that is MB could certainly come up with a solution that provides a spare. $100K++++ luxury sedans that--at any given moment--may become virtually useless due to the lack of something that up until recently, virtually every passenger vehicle and most commercial vehicles has come equipped with for over 100 years now. This needs to change! SHEESH!

Yeah, not much is going to survive a nail going through the tread and puncturing a sidewall. A positive is walking away; doesn't always go that way.

I agree on MB not having a solution for not having a spare. The 21s should definitely be runflats at least. Or one of these extremely compact spare tires.

Been around for the larger part of that hundred years and the most common solution was simply a tire thrown in the trunk. I believe that solution is still available for those long road trips. You can also go run-flats or alternatively can carry a portable compressor and fix-a-flat. The latter two will usually work if you don't own the 21 inchers discussed here with the propensity for catastrophic blowouts.

This is what I got..

I have the 22s on my RS7 285/30R22 front and rears and no issues in 2 years almost. However Audi is smarter!!! They put a jack plus air compressor etc in the trunk. Come on Mercedes, whats the deal with this. You didnt put one thing in it.. Heck the 2012 A8l has a spare, jack etc when the W222 didnt have anything. The 2007 A8l had a full size spare. Whats the deal with saving few lbs here in there between a full size and a donut and none...Blows my mind.

Baloo my friend, a flat isn't so bad. Check mine out

A pothole in a very remote part of town took out two of my tires last night. Both tires on the right-hand side killed instantly. Called a flatbed to my local dealer, and had my old 19s replaced the next day.

I've only had the 21s for a month, and this was my first journey out of the 'good part of town'.

Tire make?

I’d be interested to know the brand of tires. I could not tell from the pictures.

These are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Already much thicker sidewalls than the stock Pirelli P0s.

I changed my AMG 21" rims with P-zeros to AMG 20" with Bridgestone Turanza T005 M0-S summer tires (OEM Mercedes setup in EU with silenced tires).
It is a little bit better on a comfort side, noise is a bit better too, but there is small tire drone from 50-60 mph, but I know that tires need some time to adjust to the car setup so I will wait and see.

Overall it is better but looks are not the same anymore

I noticed a very obvious improvement in comfort and noise levels, switching from 21s to 19s.

But the looks, man. I wish there was a way to make the 21s work.
