Flowing lines and trunk storage thingie?

I'm working on putting in an order for an S580 and I've a few questions:

1. The flowing lines trim; cant get a look at it in person. My fear is that it looks like cheap plastic, my hope would be something more like Steinway. Can anyone who's seen it live comment on how it presents in person?
2. The trunk storage bin by whatever fancy name they're using. What's the word on that thing? Looks like it could be handy, but also looks like it might be in the way. Appears a little cheap on the configurator but you don't get a good look.

I haven't seen too much of the S Class with flowing lines trim, but it's not to my taste. I've had more time with it in other models, where I think initially it looks very nice (and steinway-ee), but I think it feels a little cheap to the touch (like normal piano trim) and doesn't stay so well as the car gets older. My preference is for the open pour trim personally.

And are you talking about the comfort box? It's pretty cool, isn't so luxurious feeling though

Comfort box. Yep,I was typing on the go and couldn't recall the name; thanks. I'm not really concerned that it look luxurious, it was more that it looks a bit cheap and might not hold up? I was also wondering how much space it consumed and whether it was low enough to make loading more difficult. Something I thought of afterword is whether it's easily removable?

The flowing lines would be new for me and I like that it's different. On the other hand the fake black piano plastic is something I have in my Panamera; it hasn't endeared itself over time. Mrs Crab likes the flowing lines.... Sigh...

i had done my original build with the horizontal lines, as i think it adds a bit more character to the otherwise sedate interior. that said, the gloss black was too monotonous for me...even with the lines. i ended up with the standard black poplar which i'm glad i chose cuz the 'graining' of the greys adds far more depth/texture to the large surface area. however, if i felt like burning more money, i would've gone with the vertical lines on fanned walnut...i think that surface looks absolutely gorgeous and luxurious.

i'd highly recommend the comfort box for trunk. it collapses and recedes inward so it's completely out of the way when not in use.
i've used it numerous times already for smaller grocery items i've placed in the back (eggs, bottles of wine, etc.) that i didn't want moving around all over the place.

The trunk is huge so the comfort box is useful for storing small items to prevent them from sliding to the back of the trunk. When it's collapsed you can barely tell it's there.

The flowing lines trim is not plastic, its a piano black laquer'ed wood and it looks and feels expensive. It wouldn't be my choice, but its not going to look cheap.

No worries. Sometimes we overlook the obvious. MB also offers a foldable crate, which together with the cargo net is great to keep loose items from sliding around. I prefer this over the newish comfort box, because the crate isn't affixed in a specific place and instead I still have the grocery bag hook there. I can move it to the side or towards the backseats to make room for other larger items and secure them under the net. It often helps to have the crate there as it props up the net and I can lean things against it. When not in use, the crate folds flat and stows away under the trunk floor together with the net. They both came standard with my C63S and the mold under the trunk floor has a space for the crate so it stays put.

Regarding the black piano flowing lines trim, I think one needs to consider the overall interior colour carefully. Eg if the upholstery colour is black, then would having this trim give you 'too much' black visually, as this is not a separate element but part of the total interior? Or, if the black trim contrast well with other upholstery colour of choice too.
Another thing is, since it is black and glossy, would dust be shown up more visibly and would small scratches be seen more easily?

I have a question for the comfort box.
Is it 'waterproof'? what is the material of the box? cotton fabric?
I mean, if it gets wet inside (eg a cup of coffee falls and gets spilled), will it get soaked through?

The comfort box is indeed waterproof. It will hold water. Its like a plastic and nylon type material.

The comfort box can be bought through MB as an accessory.
https://accessories.mercedes-benz.co...ox-A2238400400

However, when I do a compatibility check, I am surprised that it says 'not compatible'. Then, I observed that the above link is for W223 and mine is a V223 (long wheel base).
It links me to a V223 site which does not have this accessory listed. How interesting!

Would someone having an US V223 type the VIN into the above link's model compatibility check and see if it says the same? I just want to eliminate the region difference factor. Thanks.

since we're on the topic of interior trim, i would recommend also getting the dotted line center console option.
a very small cost...and would go well with the silver flow lines if u end up going that way.
also it will help, somewhat, reduce the visual glare of smudges and fingerprints on such a large all black gloss surface.

The Silver Aluminum Fanned Walnut Trim is beautiful and the best interior trim choice in my opinion. Have you considered it at all? I am not a fan of the Black Flowing Lines.

I second tonupbklyn with the suggestion of the dotted line console.

Yes! Get the comfort box. Why it's called that is beyond me, but I've had it on my Benzes for a few years now and it is a great feature even though it seems cheap. Only you will know it's there for the most part.

Dotted lines is already in; I do appreciate the suggestion though, it's one of those that would be easy to miss.

The day did not go well; it seems that 4D, and the exclusive leather are on constraint. They can't be selected for a MY22 or 23 build. Both were in my build so I have to decide whether to compromise or wait. I've already looked nation wide for a matching build on the ground but none exist. I've got a gut check in front of me...

Regular va exclusive napa leather , not much of a quality difference, 4d is a different story although a few folks have turned off the seat shakers as they find it annoying

There is one down in Cali that while not matching would be a closer match than what I can order and that would get me out of the missing options lottery. I'm told (by the dealer) that current build orders are getting most of the goods at this point as they're getting a handle on constraining orders up front rather than pulling options on the other side. What I can read on the internet seems to disagree, although they are claiming that it's very recent cars that are doing better on getting the full load-out: stuff that hasn't hit our shores yet. Going back to a stock car, I'd have to drive down or ship that car up and ship my Panamera down. The real problem with Cali is that my car covers almost the full cost of the S580 and that means a sales tax credit worth more than 10k on a car purchased in WA that I cant get in Cali, this effectively makes the Cali car substantially more expensive than the same car purchased here. Sigh...

back in early Jan/Feb when i was continuing to build my spec, i recall week-by-week my dealer contact would tell me about how quickly/suddenly the features would be become available...and then unavailable again.
particularly those related to electronic functions, and thus tied to chip supply. i have to imagine the supply chain algorithm/decisions prioritizes materials and chip components for those models and markets that they deem must-haves...and that ultimately affects the very sudden changes in availabilities (one week yes, and next week no). i absolutely did not want to forego active ambient, multicontour or 3D. and across a 1 month span, there were different combos available of these 3 items...constantly a merry go round of yes/no. until finally everything i wanted was available except for energizing comfort and trunk kick opener...2 items i felt i could live without perfectly fine.

my point here being, if those items you mentioned are absolutes, then i would recommend you hold out. after now having received mine and using those 3 functions very regularly, i would have been pretty annoyed shelling out 150k for a car without those features that, for me, represent the entire luxury selling point of this model.

keep plugging away with your local dealer...i'm confident u will hit your number inevitably very soon...and that you will be glad to have waited it out once you're comfortably in the seat of your new arrival.

I have the black piano lines and like it. Is it hard to keep clean, yes of course. But it flows well with
the center console. Also have the comfort box, it's ok not sure it was worth a $400 option.
