Case in point, the EQS. This is literally the only part of the EQS I like better than the 223:

It is a car that stands out, good or bad. I guess that was BMW's intention, just like the large kidney grilles on the 4er and the M3 etc. At least it doesn't look like anything else on the road, I guess you can say the same with EQS.

Im not a BMW fan on several levels
But to make an EV that actually stays true to the 7 series is 100% golden in my opinion
I struggle with trying to make myself like the S offering of MB all EV... to date i have not succeeded with liking the style of the EQS.. and im trying.. i do easily prefer BMW 7 EV more...and i threw up a lttle bit after saying that..

I like BMWs, but I hate their designs and general lack of rear seat legroom in anything outside of the 7 series. The backseat is like an afterthought in every model sans the 7 lol. But I agree, they got the EV right in just electrifying the current 7 series. Mercedes got it wrong in trying to bifurcate the S class, They chased after Tesla buyers by going with the bubble design and frankly that was a gigantic mistake. They should have simply electrified the current S class model. The loss of 0.01 cd is laughably negligible and who cares, so using that as an excuse for their bubble design doesn’t fly with me. It was them copying Tesla and making a mistake.

The S Class wouldn't have looked the same if they designed it to be both an ICE and an EV or it would have been an uncompetitive EV.

No doubt, in my view, it is one if not the worst and ugliest 7-series that BMW has ever made. I am okay with the interior front curved screen, but the exterior design, rear seats are just sooo laughable & ugly. I've sat in one, did not drive it for long except for a quick spin around the dealer parking lot.

Compared to the G11/G12 LCI, the new 7-series is a huge disappointment. As a BMW fan, I've been really looking forward to it, but as many others, it was a disappointing surprise. They are setting at some dealership and nobody is interested in them (the LCI X5/X7/XM in the show room tend to have more people around them than the new 7-series). My local dealer has 2 of them for 5 months now. Salesman tried to poke me and hinted he'd go well below MSRP if there is interest, but there is just no way on earth. 20-22' 7-series M760? hell yeah, but not the new gen ever. In fact, if I find an equally equipped fully loaded G12 M760 to my current S560, I'd be willing to switch tomorrow.

To be fair, my dealer has had several nice spec S580s that have been sitting for multiple months also they would go deep under MSRP to sell.

750e vs my S-class

I currently drive a W223 S class - had lots of electronic issues so decided to try the new 7 series - conclusion: still love my S - here's my thoughts on the new 7:
  • Positives:
    • low speed ride better than the S
    • quieter than the S
  • Negatives:
    • dash is too high - feels like you are peering over the screen
    • door sill too high - can't rest your elbow on the door sill when driving
    • interior doesn't feel like a 100K car - W223 way better
    • looks ugly - rear is too plain, front is too high and weird looking
    • ride is so smoooooth that sometimes can make you feel queasy
    • the paddle shifters are positioned so that you can't see the wiper and indicator stalks - very surprising as BMW is usually so good at ergonomics

Your comment on the interior makes no sense to me, because the main driver that pushes me towards the 7 series and away from the W223 is the much nicer interior. I can make you list of areas where the W223 interior is surprisingly cheap and the 7 is suprisingly high quality.

Just drove them back to back again the other day and IMO the 7 has a way higher quality interior.

I find the steering wheel in the 223 blocks the top of the gauges, while in the 7 I don’t see that the paddle shifters block anything and the top of the door fits my arm great, all about how you’re shaped and how you fit.

I want to want the W223 but I just don’t. If I could get the luxury line exterior in the gas cars I would get a 7 now. I’m just not 100% ready for full EV and I really prefer the way the luxury line looks.

Me too, my dealer has a couple I didnt have time to drive one the other day, I'm doing that Monday.

Its about $18,000 cheaper optioned the same, the difference in performance is not worth $18,000 IMO...

My dealer had a beautiful alpine white i7 on the showroom floor. The car looks way better in person than in pictures...

In regards to interior quality, it depends a lot on which interior you get. I think the S in exclusive nappa is better then a 7 in extended Merio or Veganza. Similarly, a 7 in full merino is nicer then a regular leather or nappa S in my opinion.

I don’t agree at all. The quality issues I have with the 223 interior don’t change depending on the package…

instill add that the 760 doesn’t glide down the highway as smoothly as the S Class, the i7 doesn’t have that issue probably because of weight.

Am just in Germany and they can't give away i7's despite them being quality cars...
They are offering an i7 eDrive50 for up to 25% off right now. So the base model is offered under 88K Euro and this includes 19% VAT. So 71K or so plus tax. More important, this is for a custom order car, not dealer stock...

The same is true here, the deals are great...thats part of the allure. No different than the EQS, and I could get 15%+ off of a new S Class right now too.

Almost every owner would get the crystal option added, so I think BMW did the right thing here despite it is not something that 100% of people would want to have.

Am actually surprised you confirmed that the 7-series was super silent - historically BMWs are a bit more noisy when tested by former S-class owners. I am not a fan on the new 7-series design, but am negotiating a deal on a pre-owned certified 2022 V12 powered M760 "7-series" now (previous generation) which in my view is a much nicer vehicle (exterior) than the new one. The motivation here is that the previous generation (2022 and earlier) will be the last 7-seriers ever with the V12 engine and I always wanted the V12 experience. Not a fan of the new 7-series but I love the interior “dashboard design”. I would still daily drive a W223 S-class as opposed to a 2023-2024 7-series if I have to choose between them, but both seem to be a downgrade "exterior styling wise" compared to the previous generation of each. Am not sure what is going on with German manufacturers. I hope Audi won't follow the new trend when the S8 is due for a new generation
I have long been a fan of the M760i, but in the pre-LCI form. A friend just got an LCI 750i, and the looks are growing on me. A lot depends on the chrome vs. shadow line trim, but I think M760's get a special burnished trim anyway, at least pre-LCI. I got to drive a pre-LCI M760 from CarMax, and I was actually under-impressed with the drive, primarily throttle response. Hesitated from a stop and non-linear. Much prefer the M-B M275/285 V12 and 5-speed auto in Sport mode which launches in 1st gear rather than 2nd gear in Comfort.

Cars with looks that have to grow on you are risky propositions in my opinion. I’ve done that myself a few times and regretted it afterwards. If you have to go against your first instinct and force yourself to justify the looks, there’s a good chance you will probably regret the purchase later on.

I now only buy cars that strikes that cord upon first looks and that visual appreciation lasts a long time. That couldn’t be said for those cars that didn’t have that initial appeal. Buying a car, especially an expensive one, is an emotional experience and if a car doesn’t immediately hit that chord, you probably won’t like it in the long run.

Actually all the cars who's looks I really love I have had to take some time to get used to them.

And "in the long run" is realtive, 4 years is the max for me. Its not a forever car.

I feel confident I can get $25k off of one...lease payments for one around $140k are about $1,700 a month it looks like with no drive off...I have to decide if I'm pulling the trigger before I really go hard at it.

I agree and have always gone for cars that I like looking at. I like the exterior of the W223, but I’m not going back there. I feel that the I7 in the M trim is horrid and in the Luxury trim is much better, but still quite odd looking. However, I was very impressed with the ride quality and the ultra quiet cabin. If I have to choose between exterior appearance vs. ride quality & quietness, I’m going for the latter. In addition, the local BMW dealer is about a half mile from my office, so nagging them if there are issues should be a relatively simple task.

In addition to the above, with two S Class sedans in a row having been repurchased from me, I think it is time for a change. I believe that the local MB dealers here in South Orange County are in “triage” mode, doing whatever they can to keep customer vehicles on the road and are absolutely overwhelmed. Trying to get them to fix minor issues is like spitting into the wind these days and the service departments are absolutely slammed. MB is trying to be everything to everybody and I believe we are now seeing the results. They didn’t need the A Class or the B Class vehicles, but there they are and if you are bringing your $150K+ S Class in for service, you are surrounded by all these much lesser vehicles. If the dealer is also servicing Sprinter & Metris vans at the same location, add hoards of these “whales” to the mix. The Mercedes-Benz experience is just not the same anymore, it really isn’t. I’m not sure the BMW experience will be all that much better, but I just may give it a try.

I can walk into a BMW showroom and actually find vehicles that appeal to me. Easy to spend money there. Can't do that with MB anymore. Controversial stying be damned, BMW is producing IMO better vehicles, better driving experiences, and better reliability. MB experience is a shell of what it once was.
