That's incorrect. It is a brand and a standalone profit center within the organization. But it was to be based on Mercedes as the underpinning.
AMG is also it own brand and builds cars that were not designed by MB. The old SLS, C190 AMG GT and new AMG SL and upcoming AMG GT and complete non-Mercedes AMG creations. To some extend this also goes for the AMG GT 4 door models. Or for engines designed by AMG and AMG only.

Well the days of true Maybach independance are long gone. Today it really is just a trim level. A couple more plastic trims here. A few more insignificant options there. That's all there is to it.
Which is probably why MB is pipming up the design so much on their latest Maybachs. There just isn't enough distinction between it and the regular S class vehicles at the moment.
