OTA MBUX Updates?

Does MB do over-the-air updates to MBUX or is that dealer only? I’m talking about updating the entire version of MBUX OTA.

BMW would push out updates to iDrive OTA. Of course, these updates would sometimes take 45 minutes and, on the rare occasion, brick our cars, lol, but it was good to get these updates, which often included feature improvements, without going to the dealer.

Earlier on MBUX updates needed a dealer visit. Now some time ago they update Zero layer for cars that did not yet have it. It is not clear if this update equals to full MBUX update or just part of it. Anyway, other MBUX over the air updates have not been release (have not been reported by owners) even if new releases exist. Difficult to say why not.

That’s one thing I’ve noticed with MB vs BMW is the lack of OTA software updates. BMW was constantly sending out updates with various changes, fixes and quality of life improvements. You can tell they tried to make a conscious effort at continuously improving iDrive.

I don’t get that feeling with MB. Now I’ll preface that comment by stating that there are in fact complete MBUX upgrades with improvements, because I got one at the dealership, BUT, it seems this update can’t be done OTA because no one else is getting it or at least mentioning it. And therein lies the issue: these improvements aren’t making their way out to the population unless something breaks, which is the complete opposite of BMW and others are doing. The latest version that I got had a lot of GOOD, NOTICEABLE changes. Such a shame they’re not distributing these OTA.

If something goes wrong in a remote system flash you can end up bricked in your driveway. Just like a phone you can go wired and flash it again even when it's unresponsive but your need an awfully long cord to reach the dealership and most wine have the tools or ability.

I do agree that it's ridiculous how little they use the OTA feature; just saying a system flash is a little different from an update to an HVAC module.

I drive a GLC300. Took delivery on 4/21 this update appeared in the app on the 28th. Nothing else so far. Except I signed up for the MBUX beta program that was done over the air. The map updates for sure will be OTA. In the past they were once a year. Not sure what the frequency is in 2023. From another post another newer 300 had a MBUX version of NTG7_E330.xxx while my older build had a version of E329.xxx. I asked the SA to look at my VIN in her system and didn’t see any update for the MBUX. Unfortunately I didn’t ask if there was a major update how would it be done. Think I’ll stop in next week and ask!

I got that update as well but that isn’t the MBUX update I’m talking about. I’m asking about the core MBUX system, similar to BMW’s iDrive, that, unlike MB, will wholesale remotely update.

For BMW, were there ever bugs and issues you face with these updates, from experience too frequent updates, there is a chance that things could break and bugs could be introduced and assuming frequent updates mean they didn't have enough time to test it. What was your experience, curious.

Got an answer. Stopped and talked to my SA today. If the MUBUX core system is going to get an update that was not handled by OTA, we would get a letter saying come to your dealership. Otherwise, everything is done OTA. The car will tell you that an OTA is being done.

Also updates are done in relationship to your VIN#. My MBUX operating version is E329.xxx and I saw that another car had a version E330.xxx same 300 SUV but different version & VIN

So the update I got at the dealership three weeks after I purchased my car (which was a few months ago), with tons of quality of life improvements, is dealer only because I haven’t heard anyone getting this yet. Has anyone received a letter to get the version of MBUX I have?

No letter for me. Yet!

The MBUX has worked even with the self imposed beta update. I have only one unexplained issue. The maps got fried. Work on a short trip where I had to find an address. After I got back in the car to go home all the maps were gone. Everything else worked and still does. Thought the OTA would kick in and download the maps. It didn’t. I have had to manually downloaded the various map areas one at a time. My jump drive can hold 2 areas but the download fails. So I have done one area at a time. If I remember correctly I had he same problem with my 2020.

Thankfully you can opt-out again of that beta if you are not a fan.

OTA is real, MB didn't lie about it, and some software updates were sent to the car this month.

For this level of an update, gotta head back to the MB dealer. OBD port must be connected( I Think)

That’s what I figured. BMW allows wholesale core idrive remotely but MB doesn’t.

These core idrive updates sometimes take 45 minutes, and I was always worried about draining the battery during these updates, so maybe that’s why MB doesn’t allow it less it drains the battery. I think most dealers will connect an auxiliary battery while working on the car.

That’s too bad because the latest version I go at the dealer is a tremendous improvement over the version that came with my brand new 2023 S. So, unless something breaks or if the dealer is willing to update you by itself, you’re SOL.

Correct, you mean the "on board voltage maintain" they do on the work order?

I heard the longest MBUX update being the camera update or the update to the control module responsible for updates took twenty minutes and you cannot be in the vehicle at that time.

if you do a manual map update it takes 15-20 minutes to do. I did it the other day while I drove. I found that although you could load more than one area on the drive it would fail. But I have had no problem doing one area per upload. The annual will come OTA if your in the car or not. Years ago when a dealer did an updates they had problems because the car would have to be unoccupied and hopefully the connection wouldn’t fail. If I open Me Connect/More/OTA I see an update done on 4/28/23 Seven days after I picked up my car. Didn’t even realize it took place. There will be more how many & how often is anyone’s guess.
