What year, engine and mileage? Is the car telling him to add oil? I know the I-6 doesn’t have a dipstick, I don’t know if the V8 does or not.
Also, regardless of what it says in the manual, cars that aren’t driven very hard or abused shouldn’t require oil between oil changes in my opinion. If he’s adding a quart every few thousand miles, something is wrong.

As the new engine is breaking in its normal for it to consume some extra quarts as the rings seat ... and the manual will tell you how much is normal for you 223 engine (6 or 8) and how often
