Adaptive Highbeam Assist

My '21 S580 has the LED Intelligent Light System and it seems like the Adaptive Highbeam Assist is turning the highbeams on and off just a little too much. Drive down a dark street with streetlights and the highbeams will go on and off maybe 7 times in just 30 seconds. It doesn’t seem to matter whether I am under a streetlight or not.

The highbeams definitely shut off with oncoming cars (instantly) and perfectly sense coming up to another car from behind and shut off at the proper time. Glass/windshield is definitely clean...not fogged up or anything like that. Dealer confirmed software up to date, no codes, and headlights are perfectly adjusted. I thought the issue might be a bad ambient light sensor in the multifunction camera, and fought with the dealer who eventually did replace the camera under warranty (and initialized/calibrated the new camera). No change at all. Highbeams still coming on and off seemingly too much.

A couple months back, the dealer gave me a 2025 GLS for a loaner and the Adaptive High Beams seemed to work perfectly (on the same road/same conditions as I drove my car).

Anyone have a similar experience with the Adaptive Highbeam Assist? Any solution?

If you are in the USA, might as well get it coded to have the full ILS+ enabled to prevent this.

Same issue with my '25 S. I don't particularly like the "open drapery" activation of the high beams either and generally change the light switch to manual and activate the high beam manually with the turn signal stalk.

Mine is not particularly turning it on/off more often than other vehicles w/ auto high-beam features.
I see how this can be very bothering.
If the W223 coding were cheaper like on the BMWs, ($200+), I would've done the coding.

WOW! One of the things I love is the "open drapery". Passenger love it as well! A friend got a Mercedes without it, and really missed it. Next Mercedes had it and he is one "happy camper!"

It's a known quirk with the system on some models. The camera is overly sensitive to reflective signs and even changes in pavement color on dark roads. The system in the GLS is tuned differently. There's likely no true "fix" as it's operating as designed, even if it's overly cautious. You can try adjusting the sensitivity setting in the vehicle submenu, but many just learn to live with it or manually control the high beams on problematic roads.

I also love it, it is pretty cool imo.

It's really the last annoying issue with my car. Everything else seems to be working very well!

Got the same issue on my '24 S580. Spoke with service yesterday and have an appointment to have them "take a look" at the system. Very annoying, especially driving dark winding roads in deer, elk and the occasional bear country.

I think the solution might be the ILS/Multibeam LED coding upgrade, but as accepting and comfortable as I am with most technology, I'm just sort of uncomfortable about having someone from the UK or Singapore hacking into my car to upgrade my lighting module.

I understand your concerns; I shared the same concerns. But after reading some glowing reviews of @EleBest , I had him (Max) code the option in my 2023 S580. He was very professional and stayed in constant contact throughout the process. I've had the feature now for a couple of months, and now that the days are shorter, it really has come into its own. You should do what you feel is best for you, but I can, and have, endorsed Max several times with other forum members.

I've seen your post(s) regarding the process and your endorsement of @EleBest. I've seen some by RJ Automotive as well, but RJ seems a lot more expensive for some reason. I recently had a software upgrade for the easy entry/exit feature and that upgrade completely messed up seemingly unrelated mileage/consumption information in the instrument cluster, with some information reading in km and liters other information in miles and gallons. Tomorrow I'll find out if the software fix that MB engineers provided the dealer will straighten things out. So that's the reason for my anxiety!

Yeah, that stinks. You might direct message Max and ask him for his thoughts on what might have caused the anomaly with the seemingly unrelated quirks after the code. But as you point out, hopefully the work you have done at the dealer will fix.

I would not hesitate to use one of the coders that exist on the forum. I have had cars coded by BenzNinja and EleBest and both did a great job. Peter and Max are both great guys and very friendly and personable, and both care about giving good service. Nothing against RJ I just personally haven't used him. You have so many people here who have used these guys I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Same here. I have used @EleBest over 3 Mbenz cars I owned, and I have also referred multiple forum colleagues to Max. I was extremely happy with his honesty and service, and others I referred were all happy with is excellent service too. In fact, for some coding trials I served as a beta-test case to be the first one on the forum to try some of the solutions he offers, as a risk taker myself, and it worked well (he enabled wireless Carplay on my GLS and lower threshold for ILS+ which helped others forum colleagues to follow through. I’d have zero concerns about recommending Max from Elebest.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences with remote coding. I'm beginning to warm up to the idea a little now. I'm just dying for the ILS+ !!

Same here.
I did extensive nighttime driving on country roads over the weekend and it made me want the feature a LOT more than I anticipated.
Auto high beam switching to low beam just cut the top lighting off and it was a huge difference in visibility.
If it had the ILS+ feature it would've been a lot more enjoyable driving at night.

OK...I think I'm ready to take my leap of faith with Max at @EleBest with the ILS+. I can't find the post from the forum member regarding a couple of cables that are needed--I think he got them from Amazon--to hook up my laptop to the car. Can one of you gents point me in the right direction?

THANKS

Here you go:

Also, a huge shoutout to Steve for his guidance and for pointing me to the correct adapters on Amazon to buy. Because I live in a larger city, I ordered and received them same day. Both adapters were less than $30.

Thank you for your quick reply, Mem. Just want to clarify the OBD connector. I know OBD connectors are relatively universal....but this one seems to be BMW specific?
