Advice on 22s on my W221
 

Guys

I currently have 20s on the car and love the ride but not the look. I've found a few wheels in 21s but not crazy about any of them. I LOVE the Vossen VC3r but they only come in 22s.

The issue is that I'm not sure I want 22s on my DD. I'm concerned about the ride and potholes etc.

So my question is for the guys rockin the 22s. Please tell me what you think and if you would've done it any differently having the benefit of hindsight

Not for a daily driver - only when you can be reasonably sure of driving on smooth roads all the time.

I am hoping that some of the guys who have changed to the 22's would weigh in here with personal experience of before and after.

I have 22's on my car and I didn't notice a difference in the ride. The ABC does a good job. For tires size I went 245 30 22 in front and 295 25 22 in the rear. You will have to dodge pot holes though as there isn't much tire for the rim to take an impact.

Thanks for the real world feedback! How are you lowered? Via ELM or links?

I have the Carlsson ELM. I lowered it to 28mm. It can go up to 30mm.

If it was my vehicle, I would try 21" wheels with lowering links. This combo gives the appearance of a bigger 22" wheel when the vehicle is lowered, yet maintains ride quality. I really think it is the best route. BBS offers the CHR-II in a 21" and there are a few forged options that would work as well. Let me know if you need any help with your wheels or lowering links.

Yeah - I did a fair amount of research on the 21's and it seemed like a great and no-brainer compromise... unfortunately, the wheels I want (Vossen CV3r) are not available in 21s. Furthermore a fair amount of tire manufacturers do not offer their tires in 21s - so I am forced to get into 22's.

I didn't want to go links as I live in Canada. For winter all I have to do is click 4 little buttons which takes less than 5 minutes and the car is back to stock height. I would think that it would ride better than links as well as the ELM tricks the car into riding lower opposed to links forcing the suspension to ride lower.

Yeah - I have the LoMo1 ELM and I can control height and turn off and on right thru the steering wheel controls in seconds. I have a buddy with links and although it was cheaper to buy, he spent as much as I did on the ELM in hourly shop fees putting the damn car up and down off the rack to get it adjusted just right. :smash::smash:

That is interesting. The lowering links run $245. Install usually runs $300 to $400. But yes, an ELM is very convenient and recommended as well if you are ok with the higher price.

I got my Carlsson unit off EBay brand new for $300. Other sites sell it for $1100 - $1500. Install cost another $300.
