What size tires on 19"

Im about to fit some 19" wheels on my S55 and wondered what size tires can I go with that wont affect speedo or tranny input ratios and set off any warning lights?
The wheels are 8.5" front and 9.5" rear. I want the widest tire I can run front/back but DONT want the ultra low profile type 35 series......am I making sense?

Stock tires on the W220 S65 were 245-40-19 and 275-35-19. I up sized to 255-40-19 and 285-35-19 on the stock wheels with no issues. Posters on other threads confirm wider tires will fit but they need to be lower profile than what I used. Wider wheels are likely advisable when wider and lower profile tires are fitted.

Tom, thanks for this. So I can go to 285/35/19 on my stock rears? They're the stock 19" 2-pieces, and the tires are up for replacement. Did you notice any handling difference or just launch?

Cheers,

maw

I also changed the front tires to 255-40-19. With the higher load rated tires the car rode noticeably better. I did a lot of experimenting with tire pressures with the larger tires and settled on 42F, 36R. With the tread 2/3 gone the wear was even across all the tires and the handling was much improved. Mostly sharpness of turn-in and closer to neutral balance. It removed some of nose heavy feeling.
Maw, since you have an S55 you have a good choice of aftermarket wheels that fit. With a W220 S65 and the 60 mm rear offset requirement there were none off the shelf, all had to be custom made for the rear. Wider tires will fit provided you use a smaller aspect ratio tire, but I would not put tires wider than the ones I used on the stock width wheels.

Thanks. Interesting notes re tire pressure. I like the stock 2-piece wheels on this car though. If they were the 18s they'd have been gone already. I did consider the 20" 2-piece AMG VIs from the W221, but those are rare as unicorns. But I would like a bit wider footprint and had always wondered what that would feel like (within rolling diameter spec), so your thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers,

maw

I agree, I liked the appearance of those stock wheels. The wider tires in the original aspect ratio fill up the wheel openings so the car looks a little better. FWIW I used Conti DW's. The new S65 came with Conti 5P's but those are 20's and the aspect ratio's are 35F and 30R.
