Maintaining battery with a solar cell

I have a solar cell which can be connected to the 12V outlet in the S65 AMG for to trickle charge the battery. Has anyone tried this? Is it generally possible to maintain the battery this way, provided of course that solar cell can provide enough output (it can in Florida). Is the 12V outlet switched or is it "pass-through" which would allow battery trickle charging?

Key has to be on. Hook it up to the battery in the trunk.
