Is AMG going to phase out the V8?

Long time lurker.
OK, I have a S63 AMG and I am rather concerned with the direction that AMG is taking. The new 2018 is out with a twin turbo 4L V8. But I am rather disappointed b/c a big reason for choosing an AMG is the engine sound. Being fair, the 4L still sounds good, but no where near as good as the 6.2L V8 or the 5.5L in the AMG I have now. But the sales hype is very much focussed on fuel efficiency (If I wanted an efficient car, I would not be choosing an AMG)

Being that due (I am guessing) to emissions standards that car makers are downsizing their engines and some are droping a couple of cylinders. Also, AMG seems to be putting in more research and effort into 4 cylinder engines.

So, my question is, is AMG going down the path of downsizing and eventually totally getting rid of the V8 entirely?

BTW, if any of my assumptions are off, I am very welcome for people to correct them. I am just worried that one of my favorite cars is going to be de-balled, as I don't really want to go toward Bentley as they really do not appeal to me that much.

2012 E550
I feel the same and fear that Mercedes in its NON AMG line is going to ditch the V8 all together. Thats why I decided to get the E550 . With that being said I highly doubt the AMG line is going to be using a V6TT anytime soon (minus the 43's). As far as the AMG line, I personally thing they will be using the v8tt platform for the next decade or so and will keep improving its efficiency and engineering to get more out of it. Audi is using a 4.0TT in is S8 and is getting 600+HP , so the potential is there for power, But if you're looking for a big NA v8, I dont think Mercedes is going back to that anytime soon due to poor efficiency.

Agreed. There's no way in he** that an S Class AMG 63 will have a 6 cylinder. Probably ever. I LOVE MY 2012 CAR and wish I could come up with a compelling reason to buy a 2014-2018 but I can't. If mine gets totaled, maybe then.

I guess there is some nostalgia around the old NA 6.3, but it's pretty old school and inferior in any measure with perhaps the exception of the sound part.

Engine design is moving forward and the M177/178 is a very powerful engine.

The MY18 is a dramatically better car than the current My14-17 because of it's updated 9-speed MCT. High time to replace the clunky old 7 speed Also an improved suspension

That said, the new I6 engine will morph to an AMG version so look forward to a resurrected 55 nomenclature. Not for the S but the smaller models like the E55. It will replace the 43 engines...

However, there will be 8 cylinder version of these 48v mild hybrids coming - which is good; zero turbolag anymore and instant full torque delivery

Thanks for all the answers guys. Good to know that they most likely will not be cutting out the V8's. So hopefully there will be many more years to enjoy such beautiful cars.

It's not a sales hype, it's a government requirement to downsize and reduce consumption

Nonetheless, while liters are going down it does (appear that the high performance cars are still maintaining their number of cylinders

Downsizing yes but performance is going way up. New engines are lighter, huge amounts of power, more headroom out of the blocks for the future, forced induction, quick spooling setups, and they sound great. That small 4.0l twin turbo V8 pushed the AMG GTR around VIR 3/10ths of a second slower than the porche 918 Spyder.....

The started watering down the brand already. Popping cars for to compete with the Asian and American markets. Soon the MB pickup truck. Their selling points are now all the technology filled interiors, along with the performance output. No longer the engineering and dedicatdedication devoted as previous. The new models all look the same except what's fits you best small, medium or a large. I'm happy I ordered to my specs built to my taste in 2015, delivery 3 months later, it's the last beast of its kind W212 E63S MY2016 distinguishable rear end bolder thicker look than the new pussified w213 smaller S. I will in the future buy either more W212 E550, or another W212 E63S different color to do a tune. I'll keep my current oNE dead stock.

nice salesman pitch. Rather have a V8 or V12 any day. Much like a older ferrari than new ones.

Well, the V12 is now officially dead for AMG's and the V8 will be eliminated over time. The E63 will become a hybrid i6. This is already on the roadmap.
One can argue over car designs but performance measurements are more straight forward. A W213 E63s will easily beat a W212 E63s any day of the week albeit its smaller engine...

friend has an w213 e63s no impressed. I could upgrade. I wont. Don't like interior big screen and a number of other issues. Beat it, I could care less if it did or not the W212 overall is way better. There are plenty of cars new and old that can beat a w212 E63S stock so what. Im happy with this beast. A tuned supra can beat it. Your adorable littleman. They new one is a smaller pussified S. Rear end is not appealing and the interior to me is hideous with a display screen. To me personally do not like the new one and the direction MB is taking I'm not going goo-goo like you over the new one. I like the w212 look way better in fact like older looks of MB way better. Like my Ferrari and Jeep I like the older ones the way they look design, don't care if new ones can "beat them". Besides I'm very young I have plenty of time to have fun.

Not a sales pitch, just fact. New cars are faster in every way. The S65 with all its 12 cylinders is almost a full second slower 0-60 than the S63.

Same with the 213. Fastest Sedan around VIR ever. Much faster than the 212.

Also the E63s is a V8.

and yet I'm wont upgrade don't care what sales pitch you try. New Ferrari's, Lamborghini's are faster than older ones. Yet I prefer the older models and gated shifter. The new email class does nothing for me tried it. Same goes for new Jeep wranglers, prefer the older body style and not into the 4 door jeeps. Much faster you say, let guess the coffee you offer also is the best in your small town.
