2014-17 S63 or 2018 S63 for best sound ????

As an AMG SLS owner, I'm hooked on AMG 6.2 exhaust sound. And now I want the best sounding S63 AMG for everyday driving. I never heard the 2018 AMG S63 exhaust, and there's none around here for me to listen to. With a smaller 4.0 displacement, I would think the 2018 would not sound as good as the 2014-17 5.5, but perhaps the MB sound department has pulled off some magic. I have two questions that would really help me decide what year to buy. (1) which engine has the best sounding exhaust?? (in other words, is the 2018 S63 better or worse than 2017??). and (2) If I buy a stock S63 and find it too quiet, I will add an aftermarket exhaust, but I have to ask which engine sounds better with an aftermarket exhaust. An S63 is a lot of money and I want to get it right the first time.
I'm baffled and could really use some help on this. (I would get an older AMG 6.2 S63, but I probably need AWD.)

I have the 5.5L BiTurbo with the resonators removed. Sounds awesome. I can't comment on the new engine. I had a 6.2L CLS63, and from what I recall, this sounds just as good or even better. Also, in case you didn't know (my salesman was an idiot and knew nothing about this car), but there is an electronic valve that opens when the car is in S or M. It's pretty quiet in C and I couldn't figure out why.

I had a salesman excellerate a 2014 s63, but he just pressed "sport" on the sport/comfort button in the center consule. The S63 was not put in S or M which I assume is done in the dynamic settings on the screen. It did not sound very aggressive. Did he do the wrong settings to get a louder exhaust?

Yes the salesman pushed the wrong button. The sport comfort button only works the suspension. The C,S,M button works the valve in the exhaust to make it a little louder and changes the shifting pattern and starts up in first gear not second. My mom loves driving around in S mode, however I catch my mom and dad pushing the wrong button from time to time. They push the sport button. Quite an amazing machine. We will probably go the route of Renntech parts, due to my dealer stands behind all of there parts. Renntech also has an exhaust system now where they keep the valve. So you can go back to quiet if you want, just by pushing a button. There are sound clips on YouTube. I think it sounds amazing.

Thanks. Unfortunately Renntech does not have an exhaust for the 2018 4 liter. That's a reason why I might have to buy 2014-17. With that information I will now try to drive both 4 liter and 5.5 liter to check out the sound. Both are great cars.

are you on the AMG private lounge? A couple guys over there have the new S63s and you can see what they say. Also, if the S has the windows up, you won't hear much. The sound dampening is VERY good in these S models (not sure how it is on your bad *** SLS).

As Barry said, you'll want to push the C/S/M button to S or M, not the comfort/sport susp mode button.

The 5.5L will not sound anything like a 6.2L in any mode without an exhaust modification (and I think the turbos on the 5.5L will not sound as good as a NA 6.2L even with exhaust modifications). My neighbor has a 6.2L and it is definitely more aggressive, I don't want to modify my 5.5L so there is not a comparison. I have not heard a 4.0L.

Taking delivery of a 2018 S63 tomorrow. Having heard a 6.2 and a 4.7 V8, this new 4.0 V8 sounds crappy at the dealer. I mean its AMG, so yeah it has a look at me rev!! sound, but it is no longer throaty or barking.

Sakodic, thankyou. I'd appreciate if perhaps you could update us on your opinion once you drive it for a day or so. Maybe you might like the sound better once you get to drive it more. Do you think you might put an aftermarket exhaust on it?

Tomorrow, Thursday, 12/14, I get to ride in a 2018 S63 and listen to it's exhaust. Hopefully, it's loud enough. If not..., I have to try to find a 2014-17 S63 that I can listen to, or consider aftermarket exhausts or give up on the S63 exhaust sound and buy a 2018 S560. I really like my SLS, but it's not an everyday driver. And my GL550 is a great family car, but it is no head turner.

The power is AMAZING. The interior cabin noise is pretty boring if you are trying to listen to the exhaust. Will capture a video sometime tomorrow for cold start. I do not want to add an aftermarket exhaust at this time. I have an F430 noise maker if I want something slightly slower with more exhaust/engine sound.

I like it quieter, I have had plenty of louder vehicles in the past.

Well..., listened to 2018 S63, but it was in "Transport" mode. Transport mode does not allow gear change. It starts and drives in 3rd gear. During shipping, cars are put in Transport Mode so the vehicles cannot be driven fast as they are moved on and off the ships.
I just cannot catch a break, lol

But I did get to eliminate the E63. Too firm for me. It felt like my BMW X6.

So still have to decide if S560 or S63....

I have a 2017 S63 and I think the exhaust in sport mode sounds just right. What doesn't make sense though is that the C/S/M switch always defaults back to C after a restart , yet the C/S modes on the suspension will revert back to the S mode after a restart. Why didn't they make it where it stays in "S" mode for the tranny like they did for the suspension????

2018 Sounds Great

Just traded a 2016 S63 for a 2018 S63. What a world of difference. The exhaust sound is awesome. The addition of Sport + makes this possible. The car snaps and pops. The 2016 S63 sounded very lame. The changes are great. I am very happy.

Thanks to everyone. I ordered a 2018 Ruby Black S63 with Mahogany/Beige interior; night pkg; heads up; red calipers; Intelligent drive; Premium rear; Chauffeur; Exclusive; night view assist; wireless phone charging; black wheels. Should have it in May. Not sure if I should have ordered night pkg, but cant change it now. Hope I like it.
Thanks to all

Wow congrats, never seen a ruby black in the wild, only the typical white/silver/black. You will surely enjoy the exhaust in sports+. Like above, it does crackle and pop a lot and on downshifts. Even if the exhaust is not up to your standard, at least you got the newest technology Mercedes has to offer. Happy cruising!

This is a pretty good video. It will always sound different compared to in person, so its better to go to a dealership and have a listen, especially with the exhaust open. Sounds good, less throaty to me compared to the out going engine.

Yes, quiet compared to the 2012 I just traded in! I don't care, I still love this car.
