Considering 2019 s65

Hello folks... Looked at this car today. Looks like some tasteful mods done on this like blackening out the chrome and badges, removing the front Tristar on the hood. There is also a radar detector installed.

18.5 k miles with ccb option..wants 135k. Factory warranty expired.

Dealer will not allow an independent ppi so no idea what lurks beneath. It's a blind bet or I can buy some after market warranty for a year.

What do you guys think? Do the electronics etc hold up in general on these after 4 years. Any particular item I should be wary of?
Drives fine but can't tell much from a test drive.

Thank you in advance in advance.

I am guessing they do not want some backyard mechanic rummaging around in their 135K car, maybe ask if another MB dealer can do the PPI. If they say no to that then I would ask for them to include at least 6 months of bumper to bumper warranty. I purchased a 2019 S63 last year with around 9K miles on it and I still had a few issues that needed to be corrected but I discovered most of them within the first month or so of ownership while it was still under warranty. Barring that, I would take it out for a very long test drive and check every possible function to make sure everything works, I mean everything. Take a strong flashlight with you as well on the test drive and poor over the entire car looking for any defects, including the CCB rotors. Short of that, the only real way to know the true condition of the car is to tear into it and do a compression check but I would guess on a car with those miles and with its age, it is probably fine. Another thing to look at is the tires, check the date code on the tires to see if they are the original set, if they are still in good condition that could mean that the car was not driven too hard, a new set of tires at 18K miles could indicate that the old set were worn out due to some spirited driving but again this is a bit subjective. Also check the carfax. The real challenge with a PPI is the fact that they can do one and then 2 days later some electrical component fails. At the end of the day it is not like 135K used sedans are flying off the shelves, you have the power here to a certain degree and I would insist on either an inspection by an MB dealer or some form of short term warranty. Upon looking at all of the documentation on the dealer website it would appear that the car has had 6 owners, which is very odd. They also spend 3500.00 on new tires, windshield rock chip repairs and repair of the lower front bumper. The bumper repair is to be expected as these cars get parked all the time with a big curb in front of them and the bumper scuffs on that stuff. I would really check the windshield for evidence of rock chips as that is problematic. Dealership seems to be pretty transparent with their documentation which is good.

Really appreciate you looking at this and your detailed response. I was offering to do the PPI from my local MB dealer and from the AMG GOAT Dr. AMG Chris Manning himself.

https://www.instagram.com/doctoramg/

But they do not want to allow the PPI and they do own a MB dealership and said that the car "checks out"

I like the idea of PPI vs short term 3rd party warranty that they can help pay for to sell this car.

They did put new tires and did some windshield repair and painted the front bumper which they said was regular wear and tear. Spent about $3500 is what they are saying in all this.

No problem, a cursory review of Autotrader nationally indicates that this is the lowest price S65 with this mileage in the country right now. It is very well equipped BTW.

6 owners and no PPI is a pass for me

Is "it checks out" the 2023 equivalent of your dad kicking the tires and letting you know the car is good to go? 😆 love these dealers

I would suggest asking a dealer for a pdf or print out of the car’s service history. You’ll be able to see what issues if any it had and when it was fixed.

OP spend the dough for five years of Fidelity Platinum coverage. Thank me later.

You will love the car. CCB brakes are wonderful.

Get a VMI for the car and read all about it. Get a Carfax. They should offer it. The dealership will let you have it inspected as a condition of purchase. They may cry about it but they want to sell the car. Taking it to a MB dealership will be easier for them to swallow then joe bloe’s corner garage who wouldn’t catch anything anyway.

I can understand there's probably more risk to them sending it to some no-name indy who might damage the car. Just ask for the vehicle's history printout since they have an MB dealership in their network, ask for the detailed printout from "the car checking out", and yes it's also a little strange to see the car has had 6 owners, especially seeing that it's a 2019. Sometimes with these cars the first owner will dump it quickly (they have more money than they ever need and just jump around in cars), second owner sometimes has it a little longer, and perhaps a third owner just didn't like the car. But that would only get us to a 3 or 4 owner max in 4 years, and we're at 6? Sounds like something might be haunted in the car...

Folks…appreciate all the responses. As an update….the deal is done!

This is a Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls dealer in town but did not allow a Ppi at the local MB dealership. Very strange way of selling. They probably don’t want this level of diligence if their ideal customers drop 500k on cullinans and not ask too many questions.

Anyways…I had Doctor AMg(Chris Manning) come and look at this car for me. He brought his STAR diagnostic tool with him that we plugged into the OBD port and looked at everything. He also test drove it and gave it a thumbs up and I did the deal based on that.

I definitely will be buying the warranty as recommended on this thread. @Highline-Autos.com, pls expect a call from me Monday or Tuesday.

I look forward to this car. The use case for this one is daily driver duties for the wife in rotation with the G63 so it will be driven a decent bit.

I saw some coupes in the market as well for not much more and maybe that was more a smarter thing to buy as they are much rarer but my kids got a big kick out of the rear screen and the headphones and now want me to figure out how to run Netflix on them 😁
