Bike Rack disaster

Oh the pain....this happened back in Aug. I have sourced the replacement glass pieces,
though the Mercedes instructions for the rear pano window say once it's removed you're supposed to dispose of it. (see attached)

I hope not, as I bought a used pieces for both.
I found a glass shop that claims to have experience with sunroof glass replacement, charging $350 in labor for both.
I had another guy who was a mobile glass guy who said $250, but when
I asked how he planned to get the broken glass out of the tracks etc,
he didn't really have an answer, doesn't even have a compressor to blow air.
Lame.

New roof glass is ridiculously expensive like $900 from the dealer.
I really hope he can use the used one. I attached some pics.
No pics of the replacment rear glass, but it looks fine.
One contact for the defrost got knocked off dammit, but they took off $50 from the price for that
and that and the dumasses cut the power wires (4 wires I'll have to splice) to the antenna,
still attached to the glass. Fortunately the RF signal wires weren't cut.

If anyone has a suggestion for glass shop in San Jose area, I'm open to suggestions.
The racks themselves are shot, but I'm not replacing them.
Major scratches on the roof, and the ins. company cut me a check for $2400.
Likely I'll come out ahead. Tempted to scrap the car, but shoot,
it's registered, smogged and runs fine despite my slow leak from the #4 cylinder of coolant,
something that will eventually kill the engine, but not yet.

Anyone considering roof racks for your bicycles, I highly do NOT recommend it.
This was the 1st time using roof racks since my other disaster 2 years prior where I replaced the whole hatch.
(it had some body damage anyway, and I had never fixed it)

If you look at the sunroof glass, you see where they cut the rubber.
I hope they can line it up with the way that is cut.

Shiettt... So did you hit something with the bikes or did the rack fail by itself?

Insurance did not total it at $2.4k?
Looks like you can even buy some new parts and still be able to pocket a bit of cash, no?

I hit something with the bikes, a tree!
Fortunately the insurance company didn't count it as a collision and said it's no fault even though obviously it's my fault.
And I'm happy to report that the damage is now repaired! And the sunroof even still works!
not posting a picture at this point they still have tape on there from the glass shop,
and I have adhesive all over the car from the tape that I used to hold the cardboard over the holes,
not to mention it's just damn dirty after sitting for almost a month almost. So yes shes alive!
In the end I paid 125 for the top glass off ebay, hundred bucks for the back glass and it even had the tint still on it,
so I won't even have to go and get the rear window retinted.

Labor was 350 so all and all I've got less than six hundred bucks into it
and I just need to touch up some scratches and of course the racks are absolutely toast .
It took awhile but I finally found a guy who had experience replacing glass on
sunroofs something most glass shops won't touch. So far it looks good crossing my fingers when the first rain comes.
Guess I'll use some of the ins. money to get the scratches painted and the whole
car detailed!

Might as well go ahead and start looking for another set of glass, as the clock has already started ticking on then next replacement.

Pretty cool that it was so cheap of a fix. Though it does sound like you're living on borrowed time with the car as it stands now.

Damn that looks painful. Always been afraid of something like this happening if I ever tried putting something up on the roof.

I was always more afraid of the glass breaking from high heels pointing up than something coming down.

That's what I'm thinking....but actually everything still works in the car.I even recently replaced the outside self dimming mirror from picknpull. That was a pet peeve, now resolved.
But I didn't want to invest the whole ins. payment in the glass, for exactly that reason. There's a clean 2002 (Yes I am considering a replacement M111 powered coupey, low miles) with 7XK miles on it for like 4K locally. Blue of course. There's a midnight blue one for less than 3K but it has a mangled right rear quarter panel, not a cheap repair.

Isn't there a Honda forum you can go hang out on? I'm sure you would enjoy all the conversation about putting big wings on the back of their 100 horsepower jap jalopies and pink or blue headlights.

DBH- Death before Honda

Since you obviously still like hanging out here and some of us are willing to tolerate your presence, why don't you break down and buy another Mercedes just to drive on the weekends or something. Or just park it even so you have a reason for actually being here.
I saw a Civic the other day and didn't look too bad until they turned on the headlights and the less than greater than tail lights came on. what is wrong with the Japanese? Their styling sucks.
