So here's the 4" Burmester door speaker in the W222 (you can zoom and see the 222 part number.) Same part in the W205 but with a 205 part prefix. I've held these in my hand (and have the set I pulled out of the C). Same cone, surround, basket, magnet, dust cap, terminals. Identical.
Bose is simply a volume control trick. Ambient noise increases with speed, radio volume is increased. Many car radios now have similar, manual speed relative volume control (VW in particular comes to mind)
Burmester is implying that their multi-channel amp setup is also, somehow, frequency dependent, which may or may not be true.

I have no idea about the Burmester, but the Bose AudioPilot does adjust frequencies (not just volume) to combat cabin noise. In fact, some complaints are that it doesn't do enough to volume.
Interestingly enough, the Bose Algorithm in at least some cases takes into consideration more than just what the mic picks up (in this case, it has a mic, the Burmester appears that it may not have a mic). In my car with the Bose Audio Pilot system, as soon as I begin to lower the convertible top, there is a notable frequency adjustment, even when parked. So it uses info from the ECM/BCM in addition to the microphone, hopefully based upon some testing. I wonder if the Burmester could use an algorithm based on a few things such as speed, window/sunroof status, etc.... Wild guess there, just based upon what Bose does.
The only "stereo" person I ever meet that did not BS was a Frenchman named Simon, the legendary owner of Audio Consultants in Evanston, Illinois. He was extremely knowledgeable and completely honest, as long as you asked the right questions. That is forty and fifty years ago. The people like him and much of equipment he sold have all passed away, not to mention the changes and mean affordability of technology today. This and the Millennial's general lack of scientific sensibility (and reasoning power) is telling.
I try not to be too harsh until I have proof, but as you say, charging huge money for quality that ought to be available for 25% of the amount is question is hard to swallow. I'll go down and get a vin for you tomorrow.
Ideally we'd want a VIN on a base Burmester in an E and also a VIN on an E with the 3D upgrade. Then I can run both, isolate the speakers and determine the part numbers.

I would agree extra microphones are not required for noise cancellation even an "active" system if controlled by firmware programming. Such a firmware method would also explain the engine sound added through speaker system.
BTW, in surfing the internet, I have found dozens of noise cancellation patents and papers describing many different methods, both Active and Passive. None specific to MB yet.
Thanks. I ran a 3D vs the base and it does appear that there are unique part numbers for the speakers in the 3D version, which I would presume would mean unique parts.
