I'm pretty sure my headgasket just went! 😢 We were just pulling in to the parking lot after getting off the freeway and my 'low/check engine coolant' light came on. I quickly stopped in a spot and turned the engine off. As I got out a small amount of steam/smoke came from the engine. I opened the hood and oil had gone all over the passenger side of the engine bay. The coolant tank has just a tiny bit left in it. I am currently waiting for roadside assistance to show up (free tow fortunately) to take it back to the dealership where we bought it no more than 3 months ago. 2007 ML63 88,748 miles.
Not too much on the ground and it's all oil, so I hope it's not too bad! The car came with a 12,000 mile/ 12 month warranty, but I'm sure they won't cover it. 😳
It has been in the shop this whole time, should be done anytime now. It was the head bolts, one sheared right off! My mechanic replaced and repaired everything according to the Mercedes TSB. I also had him do a few general maintenance things while the engine was out; rear main seal, idler pulleys, etc!
Wow. I hope all went well with the warranty claim. I am curious to know the cost of the head bolt repair. I was thinking of get a car with the 6.2L engine, but the head bolt issues scares me a bit and a 2012+ ML63 is far out of my price range.
Part of the reason it has taken so long is because we have been battling with the warranty company and it has been just a general nightmare. Unfortunately we ended up paying for it completely out of pocket. The shop that completed the work is owned by a buddy of mine so I got severe discounts on all the parts and labor. The silver lining I suppose, but we ended up at $5700 even with cash!
He used all Mercedes Genuine parts, took about 60 hours total. That price does include replacing the rear main seal as preventative and also a couple of idler pulleys that were starting to go!
Yes cam follower is the tappets. Nice job done, the new type SLS is the only ones available now, they don't leak down.
Ok, I talked to my mechanic and he said that they are new, from the dealership! What is the difference/benefit of the sls tappets? Is it a performance upgrade or just a better design?
They will be the SLS tappets and they where re-designed to prevent oil leek down.
Its all you can get from MB parts today for the 156 engine.
Same with the head bolts, re designed.
I need to do mine, all of what you have done, I bet its sweet now.
