The headbolt thing is not an if, it's a WHEN. It's a design flaw, they are going to go. Anyone here (informed) with a PFL who isn't saving up to do it preemptively - sooner rather than later - is insane.

I hear that. I plan to do mine in April when I am on the boat for a month and the car will be in San Diego. I just have to decide which shop I'm going to have do it. I'll probably do the billet Weistec pulleys as well while it's there. I'd like the car to be as bulletproof as possible.

OK, the diamond washer had me crying I was laughing so hard when I read up on it prior(should have taken my fiance to the MB parts counter instead!!!)
....and I thought I had the most current WIS but what did they change it to? I did head bolts to 37lb/ft plus 90°x3 and the can gear bolt to 33lb/ft plus 90°x1
....and considering how documented this problem is MB should be ashamed for not stepping up and just fixing the problem for existing owners

This topic came up with the techs at MSL who build loads of M156's and the guys told me that they have even see the revised headbolts snap too....no yeah, as BLKROKT said, it's more a design flaw and something that all of us need to be mindful of. Granted, the revised headbolts are probably significantly less likely to break as the first design. I hope that whatever it causing a problem for your car isn't costly to fix....keep us posted.

If anyone wanted to know WHY the head bolt issue exists THIS ought to clear it up for you....as brilliant as everything I saw while inside was on the M156 whoever designed this should be shot, hung, drawn and quartered, burned at the stake and THEN made to vote Tea Party for the rest of their natural lives.....
....and every one I have seen torn or broken has separated on THIS plane...hell, there is virtually zero material in there and what is there is bored on an angle which aligns the shear force with the angle of applied torque, it can't help but to break

Don't want to jinx anything but my limited run time has been great.... I finished Sunday afternoon, drove it around 10mi then parked as I had to leave around 3:30 Monday morning for a conference... Monday morning drove approx 55mi to pick up my State vehicle and it ran flawless the entire way(actually ran a lot cooler than before, never got to 190°)...only out of place thing is the STRONG smell of burning oil but considering that a lot of oil runs out from the heads and down onto the manifolds and cats its to be expected, should burn off relatively quickly...I'll be back tomorrow and will put around 80-90mi on tomorrow afternoon so hopefully all will be smooth

Side note: the day it all went wrong was the same day I finished my latest projector retrofit(Evox-R v2) and so I had NOT gotten to drive it at night to enjoy the lighting... Well I might as well have been at the Spearmint Rhino those 55mi this morning at 2:30am because the engine running good and the ungodly crisp light was almost an emotional experience.... Kicked me right in the feels

The dealerships couldnt find the actual problem :/
Taking it to a workshop which modifies bmw/benz (eurocharged authorized dealer).
Hope its nothing major

I wish I had more to share, but I'm simply relaying what the tech's told me. They told me about the revised head bolts breaking after I said "...at least the newer engines have the revised headbolts" in a discussion. They said they've come across two cases, but that is still significantly less than the first generation design, which jptaylor's picture perfectly illustrates (great pic, JP).
TBH....it was the first time I'd ever heard of the revised headbolts breaking, so I would take it with a pinch of salt for the moment (please Lord don't let me be the first to suffer this on mbworld and swallow those words )

My guess is that the workshop will do that test where they connect some kind of bong to the coolant reservoir and it changes colour or something if/when it detects combustion gasses inside the coolant. If your checks out with that test, fingers crossed, it might not be as bad as first feared.

I have seen that contraption though and it is pretty cool....let me add this though....I could let mine warm up, shut it down, remove the oil filler cap and put my ear down to the fill hole I could hear the coolant hissing into the valve cover(but my issue was ON the driver side)
