19" AMG WHEEL REFINISHING QUESTION

Hello,

I just recently purchased my 1st AMG - a 2007 Black SL 55 with the P30 package! I'm picking her up tomorrow. As you guys know the car comes with Titanium colored 19" forged wheels. I really like the grey/or darker color centers of the SL65.

I want to split the rims (after I have the tires removed) and have them powder coated at my buddy's shop. I will be polishing the lips myself.

I have had experience splitting BBS two piece wheels but never AMG wheels. It looks pretty straight forward by unbolting the special fasteners and probably using a rubber mallet from behind to pop the centers out. Does anyone have any tips on this process? I just want to run into an issue where the centers are permanently welded to the barrels. My BBS RK II wheels needed 20 ft/lbs of torque to tighten all the titanium bolts for reassembly. Thanks!

Wow, I just ran across a very old post were a member said the bolts are titanium and permanently glued in with Locktite! Attempting to removed them can strip the head or thread all together! Well, I know Locktite in not a strong as a spot weld and can easily be "softened" by applying heat to the bolt. Hhhhmmm. Maybe I should learn to live with the silver centers, trade with someone who has dark centers or just got some bling HRE?s?

Heat on the bolts for sure and a hand held impact tool with matching bit.
Back off the bolts a couple of turns.
Leave the tire on then slowly add pressure until you hear a pop.
Or mask and paint!

Thanks.

Thanks Vince. In my last BBS project I was able to leave the tires on the rim but did take all the air out before removing the centers. I really want to remove them and do it right by powder coating instead of painting.
My BBS wheels are eight years old and they don't have one chip on them and this is on my car I drive daily.

Curious, have you actually split these rims in the past? After looking at them closely, the bolts look very short and would die if I strip or snap them. Also after heating them...there will be no turning back huh?

No I have not. I would at the least find out where to buy new ones ahead of time. And a hand impact tool is a cheap investment. What could go wrong!

Very true! That is one tool I still have to add to my chest! I had a cheap Harbor Freight one that broke the 1st time I used it! Surprised? I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.
